There have been 621 detainees released to date including Bin Laden's body guard back in 2003 when we were still trying to find Bin Laden and now we are having hearings over 5? Seems a little bit uneven.

The Milk Carton Guy
Bergdahl Critics Didn’t Howl When Bush Freed PrisonersIn early 2003, military investigators traveled to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to interview one of the prison camp’s most valuable detainees, a Qaeda loyalist from Morocco named Abdullah Tabarak. According to multiplereports, Mr. Tabarak had been Osama bin Laden’s chief bodyguard and longtime confidant, and he gave himself up to help bin Laden elude capture shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks.
But when the investigators arrived, Mr. Tabarak wasn’t in his cell. The guards would not say where he was. His disappearance was so mysterious that one investigator took to calling him “the milk carton guy.”
Of the 779 people who have been detained at the United States military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, 621 have been transferred and 149 remain, according to an ongoing analysis by The New York Times and NPR. In addition, nine detainees died while in custody
The others were released under Bush from the belief they posed little threat and liberal pressure to do so. Democrats wouldn't complain as they wanted it, and Republicans wouldn't complain as their guy gave in and did it.
These 5 were released under Obama from negotiating with terrorists and are believed to be more of a threat.
Plus politics. If we are honest, some Democrats would crap a ton of bricks if Bush did this and some Republicans would be silent if...Reagan did this.
End thread?

If we were being honest there would have been equal criticism over the last decade, did we ever have a hearing on just one of the 600 releases.
I don't disagree with releasing the prisoners but the "belief" that they posed little threat was incorrect, Osama Bin Laden's body guard posed little threat, interesting.
The release is not a liberal concept, many middle of the road politically see Guantanamo for what it is.
The current crop of Republicans in the House would have hearings if the Obama's changed brands of toilet paper at the White House. It's all a dog and pony show for them.

Exactly.
Nearly every poor decision made by Obama is just continuation of Bush's policies, while the rest of his actions are mostly trying to clean up the mess left behind by Bush and his cronies.
Of course, those on the far right like to pretend that Bush never happened, the nation was in perfect condition up until January 2009, and that huge mistakes can magically be fixed in short order. Their ignorance is laughable, as is their claims of being "real patriots" when their party has done nothing but produce clowns who can't even meet Obama's mediocre standards.
No doubt this thread will end up falling off the first page in a few hours given the laughable right-wing bias around here...

Did bush go through congress to have those guys released?

It is uneven. This whole controversy over these 5 is just another right-wing attempt to smear and destabilize the Obama administration.

I guess it beats actually getting something done in Washington, doesn't it? Every time somebody brings up the fact the Congress is deadlocked, they holler SQUIRREL!!!! And the RWers obey every time.

There should have been criticism, but put closing Gitmo together with partisanship together with the relative lack of publicity on the prior releases, and you get what we got. A substantial number of 'unproven' fighters against U.S. troops back on the battlefield.
Had this been a simple release or transfer rather than an exchange for Bergdahl with the surrounding hoopla, it would have gone without a whimper.
