I kept walking straight; away from the direction of my home. I ignored him. He followed for about three minutes. He was about thirty feet away, but he would cross to the same side of street when I did. Then I thought this is getting ridiculous, so I turned a corner and started running. I turned another corner, then jogged most of the way home.

If I truly felt unsafe, I'd have called 911 and given them a description of him.

Depending on how I felt about that move, I'd have maybe told him that I had made the call.

I'd probably have engaged in some "hawking and spitting" as I have heard that can be a turn off to predatory men. Picking one's teeth too. Could be a myth, but it can't hurt.

If you're frequently finding yourself in unsafe situations like this, I'd get some pepper spray.

Now, what concerns me is that you were walking to your house. I think that may have been a bad idea if you hadn't lost him. You don't want people like that to know where you live. All that walking and there was no convenience store or bar you could have ducked into?

Head back to the public transit stop, walk up to one of the homes and knock on the door. Tell them you are being followed and ask them to wait for the police with you or allow you inside.

How far do you have to walk to your home? Why didn't you just go home?

^^ This.

911 is dealing with true trauma in progress (heart attacks, fires, people dying, fights, domestic violence, other crime).

I now keep a better eye to see who's in the vicinity and where they are going.

Well, at least you got a workout from the ordeal.

Sadly, the homeowner probably would have shot you. How many stories have there been recently where someone in need goes up to someone's door and knocks and the homeowner shoots them? There was a few incidents recently like that.

If someone was following me I would have looked for an open store and went inside. Or I would have taken out my taser or pepper spray and been prepared to use it. Look on Amazon. I got a taser and pepper spray for under $20. That's cheap for the peace of mind it brings.

You feared you were about to be attacked. No one would have judged you for calling when it appeared to you that a crime could be imminent.

Carry an anatomically correct, male adult toy in your purse. When the stalker isn't looking, quickly position said toy in the appropriate spot, and, with a big grin, wave him onward.
He's not likely to bother you again.

Not smart. You isolated yourself.

Stay where there are other people or go to a well-lit place. If there was a parking lot.... there is a business. If it's open.... go inside.
