I'm so sick of this subject! I once heard an old black man on local radio call in to a show on which a black alderwoman was complaining about slavery and how she wants her "40 acres and a mule" that was promised back in the 1800's. The old man said to her (I'm paraphrasing) "You ought to thank God that slaves were brought here to the US, if not, you'd probably be living in Africa, in the jungle just trying to survive. Instead you live in the greatest country in the world, have a good job, a home, a family, plenty to eat and the right to live the way you want. If your ancestors hadn't been slaves years ago, you would be today" ! I'm not saying that slavery was right but it still goes on today all over the world. But it seems that only the US was the only and worst perportrater . We do not owe the decendants of slaves one damn thing!

I also want to add while I don't believe AAs are owed anything, I also don't need white people telling me (or minorities in general) what *our* struggles are, how we should feel about them and that they feel butthurt for the wrongdoings of a select few

The story of "40 acres and a mule" is also a bit of a mythological thing.

It was not granted by act of Congress, or promised by the president, or anything like that. It was a field order by General Sherman, and it was something that was fairly limited.

If it actually had full force and effect, it would have concerned ONLY 400000 acres of coastal lands primarily in Georgia, and essentially would have been a segregated community, no whites allowed, a black only community. This same mentality came to typify what was wrong with the south during segregation, and for which the modern civil rights era sought to abolish.

Blacks not from the area who wanted the "free land" would have had to migrate to these lands.... and many did while it was in effect. So essentially, they would have had to have done the same thing they were later given the opportunity to do during the Homestead Act period.

Sherman's field order was later overturned. Also, no mule was ever promised.

Reparations have been and are continuing to be made- it's called welfare. I have no respect for people- black or white with the "VICTIM" mentality. We are responsible for our choices and the consequences of them. Choosing to get pregnant repeatedly while young, without marrying, dropping out of school will result in poverty. It's nobodys fault except those who choose that way of life. I feel bad for the children, but giving their irreponsible parents money will not help, it will only perpetuate the problem and deveop a sense of "entitlement" which many already have, and Obama promotes. I know alot of peoples feelings will be hurt, but the truth hurts.

Reparations again? Good grief

Reparations? Seriously?
Such a proposal could never be taken seriously in Congress. I doubt that coherent reparations legislation could even be drafted. Why, then, are we suddenly hearing so much about it? I suppose it is part of the Democratic Party’s strategy of stirring up racial enmity. If the Democrats’ purpose is to keep members of their base endlessly riled up, the fact that any serious plan of reparations would be a non-starter is a feature, not a bug. It is, in other words, just one more sign of the degraded political environment in which we live.

Why dont we tell HOLOCAUST survivors to get rid of their victim mentality.
Germany to Pay 772 Million Euros in Reparations to Holocaust Survivors - SPIEGEL ONLINE

The German government has agreed to pay €772 million ($1 billion) for the homecare of Holocaust survivors throughout the world. The decision was reached by the German Finance Ministry together with the Claims Conference, a Jewish fund for victims of Nazi aggression, after negotiations in Jerusalem concluded on Tuesday.

The money, which will be given in stages between 2014 and 2017, will provide some 56,000 Holocaust survivors -- about a third of whom reside in Israel -- with home nursing care, medication and social services, said the Claims Conference in a statement. The funds are especially important now, it added, because the survivors who are still living are increasingly elderly and have an ever-greater need for such services.

"We are seeing Germany's continued commitment to fulfill its historic obligation to Nazi victims," said Stuart Eizenstat, a former United States ambassador who acted as chief negotiator for the Claims Conference. "This ensures that Holocaust survivors, now in their final years, can be confident that we are endeavoring to help them live in dignity, after their early life was filled with indescribable tragedy and trauma. This is all the more impressive since it comes at a time of budget austerity in Germany."
and you forget the key word in your post SURVIVORS. as i said many times before, you show me a LIVING survivor of slavery, someone who was in fact a slave IN THIS COUNTRY BEFORE it was made illegal, and i say go ahead and pay them, in fact give them two million dollars and do it today. however i seriously doubt you will find anyone old enough to have been a slave, as they would have to be more than 150 years of age.

Just like their ancestors I see. It's because of this most black people see themselves as worthless in this country, and whole generations will be lost as a result. Wealth in this country determines equality. As of right now, there are only two black people in this whole country who are billionaries. Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan. Oprah I don't believe have any children. So when she dies, who knows where her wealth is going to go. Jordan then will be the only black billionaire. (We did have another one. I believe the founder of BET, but his wife took half of his fortune in their divorce)

Things like the ambiguous Affirmative Action only helps the black middle class, but we never needed Affirmative Action to begin with as far as it goes. Yes it helped, but that kind of help wasn't needed. In other words the protection under the law was more needed than Affirmative Action.
Blacks have the same opportunity as anyone else. The fact that they believe they should be entitled to everything from cradle to grave is something that needs to be disabused.

You ignore the history of how much of the land that was given to black people, particularly in the south, was taken back. Many of the black families that got land through the programs you mentioned, lost it over the years at a much faster rate than their white counter parts. Then you mention black people who went back to Africa, I'm sure most people would have wished most black americans took that route, in fact that is what Abraham Lincoln wanted. However it was a different story back then. The white majority wanted to keep black people here to profit from us and all our free labor. Once that was taken, it was only then people wanted us out of here. By then Lincoln was dead.

So what are you trying to say, that we should be glad to live in America? Black people may be rich in this country, but we are definitely not wealthy by any means. What, our richest people are entertainers and athletes. Is that what black people should be striving for? Most of those guys will lose that fame and lose their riches. They won't pass it down to their kids. For those who do, they will lose it because they won't be famous. A lot of black riches, no black wealth.
I won't repeat myself except read point one of my response.

Quote:
Listen, let's end all the social programs then, since black people are the poster family for all of them. Just give us our reparations and afterward if you wish, you can forget all about slavery.
So you want to profit from the wrongs of 100 years ago. That's pathetic and immoral. You feel you are entitled. Emigrate to the socialist country of your choice with your hand out. You won't get a thin dime here.

If you both of your parents identify as black, then you would be eligible. If one of your parents are black, you would be eligible. Etc)
Never happen.

Just give me my reparations and we can forget slavery and the Jim Crow era ever happened.
Where are my reparations for losing a great-great uncle in the war to free the slaves? Black people need to pay me in gratitude.

So if people see us as whiners, it's only because that is all that ever worked for us. A direct compensation for past wrongs would have been a deal between parties of equal stature. A "I harmed my brother, let me give you some of mine to help you back on your feet". No, instead we black people had to whine for justice, like dogs, and the government gave us some bones. So again, if black people are nothing but whiners, it's no wonder why. Everything we got had to come with kicking and screaming.
Show me a live slave who was wronged and he/she can have reparations.

At this time I will not feed the trolls.

Ridiculous argument.
