We lost 200 a week in Viet-Nam, 20 a month in Iraq. You suppose THAT might have something to do with the difference?

Until AFTER Nam, you could be drafted while you couldn't vote. This was the case was from the Civil War through Nam. Talk about a form of taxation (not with money but manpower) without representation. World War II even had anti-war protests by the Nation of Islam (who opposed the draft) and isolationists.

Nope.

If this nation is attacked, we will all be fighting anyway. Otherwise, let the leaders man the battlefields of pointless wars. We haven't been in a justifiable war in... oh... about seventy some-odd years.

I'm against the idea now. The only good argument I have heard for it is would force the out of touch people in big cities to be around the people from rural areas that they despise.

With some reforms to the way the military operates now I would be more open to the idea.

I agree and believe this is absolutely true...it would end the lopsided responsibility of those less fortunate, and the wealthy that control business and politics would be forced to reevaluate this perpetual era of war.

The children of the wealthy always find ways out of it.

Yeah. When we had a draft, nobody ever got away from service! Besides, given the obesity rates and laziness of many today, how many could make it in any event?
