It doesn't matter what the name means to you. It's offensive to peaceful Irish people.
That would make sense if say, the Washington Redskins was founded by American Indians. Notre Dame's team name was given by the Irish Catholics that ran the school.
If Irish people are offended (and they're not) they should take it up with the Irish Catholics that run the Irish Catholic School that calls its sports teams the Fighting Irish.

So you know that no Irish people are offended? That's rich.

If you knew any that were (at least any that wouldn't provoke derisive laughter), you would have showed them to me already.
That fact remains that the "Fighting Irish" isn't racist or in any way meant to be offensive because it was thought up by Irish Catholics at an Irish Catholic university. Your comparison to the Redskins, which got their name in an era when casual racism was a large part of American popular culture, is not an apt one.

Redskins was never intended to be racist either. Have you read the owners comments. I doubt you have.

Redskins comes from an era in which casual racism was the norm. He probably never gave whether the name was offensive much thought one way or the other, but we do know for a fact he was a racist, he had to be forced to integrate the team.
At least this thread finally settled the age old question of who speaks for the turds.
