It's like an abused wife that keeps taking her two-timing husband back! SMH
2008–2010: Ethics issues and censure
Letterhead use and Rangel Center fundraising
Renting Harlem apartments at below-market rates
House parking garage
A September 2008 New York Post article reported that Rangel had been using a House parking garage as free storage space for his Mercedes-Benz for years, in apparent violation of Congressional rules.
Taxes on Dominican villa rental income
Rangel was accused of failing to report income from his rental of a beachside villa he owns in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. A three-bedroom, three-bath unit, it has rented out for as much as $1,100 per night in the busiest tourist season.
Defense of tax shelter
Unreported assets and income
On September 15, 2008, it was disclosed that: a) Rangel had omitted from his financial reports details regarding his sale of a Washington, DC home; b) discrepancies existed in the values he listed for a property he owns in Sunny Isles, Florida (varying from $50,000 to $500,000); and c) inconsistencies appeared in his investment fund reporting. He apologized, saying "I owed my colleagues and the public adherence to a higher standard of care, not only as a member of Congress, but even more as the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee." Republicans called for his removal as chair. Rangel said there was no justification for that, as the mistakes were errors of omission, that would not justify loss of his position.
The same thing that's wrong with people in your district. You vote for people that put their personal interests ahead of the nation's interests.
very true. unfortunately that is what happens when we vote for politicians. people think their representative or senator is somehow some kind of deity to be worshiped as the alter of the voting booth.
Yea, what's wrong with these people? The GOP told them in plain English who to vote for, and they pulled for Rangel anyway......
I'm still astounded that so many people wanna tell the people of Harlem what to do. I don't see Harlemites telling others who they should elect as their representatives.
If they like Rangel, they should vote for Rangel. Personally, i wouldn't because he's old and washed up. Too many ethics problems too. But then, i don't live in Harlem and i don't know what he's done for that community.

First if you don't live in the district much less NYC what's it to ya?
Second if the choice had been between Rangel and another African American Democrat things *may* have gone differently. However since it was not and the opposition was Hispanic/Latino there you are then.
Primaries in NYC have famously low voter turnout, so the bar is set VERY low. African Americans in Harlem are feeling pressured on all sides (gentrification, growing Latino/Hispanic population, declining numbers of their own....) so wanted for various reasons to stick with what they knew.
If Mr. Rangel lives out this next term he has said it is his last so there you are then.
Mr. Rangel ran unopposed from another AA because that is how the NYC Democratic political machine wanted things to go. My hunch it will be another "senator Lautenberg" situation where Mr. Rangel will go when he is good and ready, not before. Of course Mr. Lautenberg did die in office and the young Mr. Booker who had been chomping at the bit for his seat got it anyway....
Congressmen and Senators vote on issues that effect the lives of each and every American not just those in their home district.
Just sayin'.
yup.
a lot of posters here say we're not supposed to care about that, though.
