Back that statement up with some evidence. Prove it. Your statement has no basis in fact if you cannot prove it or back it up with some evidence.

The problem America has - a major problem - is we care more about sports than reality - the bastardization of our country and culture, our imperialism, the moral decay. This is just like Rome before that rotted from the inside out. Ever hit you that the "Sports" section is almost the biggest in your local paper even though it has grown smaller and smaller over the last couple decades?

So as far as I'm concerned - athletic as I am (I've played six sports growing up and still play several regularly) - at the end of the day Ann's opinion on this is rather moot, even though it's silly in the grand scheme to begin with.

If you care that much about this issue to dedicate numerous posts to it - to criticize it - maybe you should look in the mirror.
I am one of those people who would much rather play the game than watch it. If I cannot participate in the game, then I am not interested. On those rare occasions when I buy a newspaper, the first thing that gets tossed is the "Sport" section. I find the classified ads more appealing than reading about sports.

I stopped playing sports many, many years ago. The only game I play regularly these days is golf. In fact, my tee-off time is scheduled for 8:00 AM this coming Saturday. I will be up by 5:00 AM, fishing for King and Silver salmon on the Little Sustina River by 6:00 AM. I should be able to catch my limit, get breakfast, and be ready to tee off by 8:00 AM and be home in time for lunch.

That Atlantic piece that was linked to previously suggested that the visceral response to soccer has little to do with the game and everything to do with it being seen as a symbolic attack on American exceptionalism. I am thinking they may be on to something.

Well then you should embrace soccer. Soccer was the most physically demanding sport I had ever played, right next to hockey. Ever seen a fat soccer player? How many times do you see a fat (linebacker, usually) football player?

As far as golf, well that's mostly what I do now as well (I'm an 8 handicap). Did you know golf was invented in liberal Scotland?

And also, as far as it being a left-leaning sport (if there is such a thing), have you seen the racist 'right' in Europe and how far off the charts that is compared to anything stateside?

So that blows that theory right out of the water. The racist 'right' ("ultras") literally only congregates at 'football' (soccer) games in Europe, and at an alarming rate.

And those are people I don't want to be around. If I ever go and see a soccer game in Europe, I'm going to ask which seats are the safest to sit in.

Is this is basically an Onion-style parody of over-the-top conservative stereotypes?

It just sounds like something the writers of the Colbert Report would come up with...

No, it's just P&OC. Not need for parody, when you got the real thing.

I played soccer, when I was 6 years old. I also played hockey in St. Paul, MN back in the early 1960s. Not on an organized team, just a bunch of us neighborhood kids on a frozen pond. Hockey is considerably more physically demanding than soccer. After all, when was the last time anyone was body-checked in soccer? However, that is beside the point. Baseball is probably the least physically demanding of all the sports.

With regards to golf, my handicap is into the double-digits. I never said I was good at the game, just that I play it. I was much better at baseball, basketball, and football, but at 60 years of age, those days are long gone.
