The Supreme Court announced a 5–4 decision today in the case Harris v. Quinn that will prevent public-sector unions enforcing mandatory collection of dues from individuals who are partial public employees on free-speech grounds, because the dues can be used for political activity.
...
However, this isn’t as dramatic a ruling as some may have wanted, and it isn’t nearly as disastrous for public-sector unions as it could have been. Most public-sector employees at the state and local level will remain unaffected by the decision. The Court could have struck down the power to make public-sector-union dues mandatory, or even done so for private-sector dues too, essentially making every state a “right to work” state, but it didn’t do so.
Non public unions cannot force membership dues, on non-members.
We need three more things....
1] no closed shops....Freedom of Choice
2] union members must pay for their institutions.
3] unions are barred from making any campaign contributions
That means that not one dime of tax-payer money goes to the National Labor Relations Board. Union members pay for it out of their own pocket, and if they cannot afford it, then, gosh, I guess we'll just have to do away with the NLRB and its unnecessary bureaucratic tentacle offices and agencies.
Yet another unanimous ruling against the Obama Administration and its supporters. Losing count, but I think it is 14 unanimous rulings against Mr President and forces, in less than two years.
Nope, just make them optional. Restore people's free choice.
If they WANT to join a union, they are free to do so. If they don't want to, they don't have to, and their job security will not be affected.
Of course, most people won't want to join a bunch of thugs who keep taking their dues and giving the money to politicians who vote against the people's interests. So the unions will likely wither and die, as they deserve.
Just a small step in the right directions. Membership dues is supposed to pay for the service of collective bargaining. That's all.
No union should charge members a penny more than the actual cost of collective bargaining. Well, ok, also the cost of representing members in grievance disputes.
If pro labor activists want to advocate for their issues politically, they should do what gun owners do through the NRA and the left does through voluntary operations like Code Pink and ACORN - form their own special interest group and fund it through money out of their own pockets.
