The southern states more heavily tax their lowest income residents which hurts those residents and the local and state economies. The south has an aversion to outsiders and people who are different.

All of these are really based on the slave trade which so perverted the south's economy and political institutions that they have not yet recovered from the impact.

I guess you never heard of unions and gaff in the north.

You don't have clue as to what you are talking about.

Did they take into account thee is no way in hell to get work done in places like NYC. Philly, Boston, etc. WITHOUT going through a union, probably MORE then 1 union.

I didn't see unions mentioned ONCE in the article.

SMH conservatives are unable to deal with objective reality.

Look, I want the southern states to do better economically, educationally, health wise, etc but conservatism is at it core about excluding and demonizing the different other. conservatism requires enemies to hate.

Sadly, in the southern states especially given their brutal history with slavery and violence of subjugating sometimes the majority of people in a given state, the enemy they hate too often is other southerners living in the state, so southern states tax policies, labor policies, all benefit the wealthy and hurt everyone else.

So you get lots of low paying jobs with no benefits, those a legion in the southern states and mostly that's a matter of conservative policy.

Regressive taxes are good, in the sense of making everyone pay. There is no reason why a wealthy person should pay more taxes than a poor person. "They can afford it" is bogus. It's an excuse for selfishness. Wealthy people don't have special fire departments that other people don't have. Wealthy people don't have a private lane on the highways that only they can use. Wealthy people don't have specialized Army divisions tasked with only protecting them. Now, it is true that wealthy people can take advantage of loopholes, use their money to buy influence, hire better lawyers, etc. Part of that is corruption, and part of that is just life. Money is used to buy things. If you have more money, you can buy more things. That's what creates an incentive to work hard and innovate. But these things are not a reason to simply slap higher taxes on wealthier people. There is not one single legitimate reason for progressive taxation.
They sound good until you ask yourself why the best countries in the world all have them. Changing our system would raise the taxes on probably 80% of the population. That means, kids go hungry, schools get worse, crime goes up and GDP goes down since wealthy people don't need to spend their money in the country. That leads to more social problems, more spending on police, more incarceration, a less educated workforce. That leads to higher taxes to pay for that and jobs lost to other countries since the United States would now look like a third world country.
