Could this similarly have happened to the other recent Malasian plane that was allegedly lost in the ocean that we were all looking for especially Australia?
How is it that Fox News knew right away that there were 23 Americans on board (from the plane's manifest) but the State Department still can't say if there were any Americans on board hours later?
Not so!
As I wrote in another post, Gary Powers U-2 which was at approx. 60,000 feet and traveling at around 500 mph was taken down by the Russians with a SAM-2 missile in 1960.
SAM-2 is 1957-60's vintage.
So are F-104 Starfighters, but they're still damn hard to operate.

Unlikely. Very little to gain. Some trigger-happy rebel, more likely.

Fox can afford to be wrong. The State department has to be sure and needs to verify the count and the manifest against gov't citizenship data.
1. Separtists shot the plane down mistaking it for a military aircraft.
2. The plane was shot down intentionally to create an international incident. The only people who would benefit from that is the US installed regime in Kiev.
We'll know the truth by the reaction of the Obama administration. If they deploy NATO troops to Ukraine, the answer is #2.
Another question is: why would international passenger airlines be flying over a war zone?
All three flight paths are not that significantly different. They change depending on the weather obstacles and other air traffic in the area, as directed to pilots by air traffic control.
Its about a difference of around 150km or so compared to the normal route over the Sea of Azov.
Heading in that direction, which other airlines have specifically been avoiding, was not a wise idea in anyway, shape or form.

I'm guessing Fox news doesn't have an obligation to notify the family first before releasing names/numbers to the public. The State Department probably does.

There was an election, but hey, don't let facts get in the way of your tinfoil rant.

Ukrainian government and other sources were reporting the flight manifests, or what they claimed were the flight manifests early on. People from many various nations were on that flight it seems.

"Interfax reports that the Ukrainian Interior Ministry says that everyone on board was killed. The Interior Ministry claims that 23 Americans were killed in the crash, according to Interfax. The State Department is looking into whether Americans were on the flight."
