And right you are. As long as the US punishes all of Cuba because Castro opposed us we are punishing the wrong people.
People need to remember. Castro came to us for help before he went to the USSR. In fact he didn't want to become a puppet of the USSR. His brother however had no issue with it.

Illegal immigration is a 100 year old problem. The numbers began increasing in the 60's. It became a tidal wave in the 80's. According to Pew Research, illegal immigration peaked in 2006 coinciding with the housing bubble.
No fence will be high enough nor troops deep enough so long as illegal immigrants can obtain employment. Congress receives backlash from their constiuants who profit off of undocumented workers, so the " popular" approach is to spend $70-100 billion a year, each year, pretending to secure the borders.
We Americans want the benefits of cheap labor and then blame government for the long term consequences.
Governor Rick Perry wants the federal government to pick up the ongoing tab of creating new well paying jobs in his state and no interest in preventing the employment of undocumented workers in his state. His people would not stand for it if he advocated otherwise.
Cuba would have done VERY well for itself had it not been for the brutal embargo imposed on it by the free-trade lovin' US govt. That's because the Miami area of Florida is a key swing area, so both parties pander to the rich former Cuban landowners who became refugees there.
Even as desperate as the situation is there, they still have about the best health care and education in Latin America.
So Communist Cuba would be better off if the US practiced capitalism with them?
I might also add that Cuba received plenty of aid from the USSR and other Eastern Bloc nations since 1960 and they also received sweetheart trade deals like cheap oil and sold their sugar at above market prices. Cuba also has trade relations with Canada, Mexico, and most of South America and Europe. But somehow it is only the US to blame for Cuba sucking.

I wouldn't go as far as to call it a paradise, but it was the most developed nation in Latin America and it was wealthier than even a few European nations, so Cuba's "successes" has more to do with retaining the quality of healthcare and education that already existed as opposed to some spectacular improvement by the Communist party.

Both were already shifting towards the USSR. There were too many high-ranking Communists in Cuba's revolution for Cuba to have ever remain a US ally and Castro already was planning on nationalizing American assets on the island.
The US has a long history of doing business with whatever dictator takes over as long as he is friendly. Do you think the US just turned on Castro because Batista was so completely awesome? No. They knew he was beholden to the Communists and they were going to seize power at that point with or without Fidel.

Yes, of course it would be better off if the US practiced capitalism with them. Then they would have the luxury of being able to transition into a hybrid socialist/capitalist economy like all the industrialized countries of the world have, including the US, Europe, China, and Russia.
Russia doesn't support them in any significant way since the Soviet Union collapsed.
Cuba is right next to the US, people have rowed boats and sailed rafts from there. The volume of trade with much smaller, poorer, and more distant countries doesn't compare with what both the US and Cuba would gain from free trade.
It doesn't matter how liberals or anyone else sees Cuba.
Cuba is a sovereign nation for better or worse. I want the embargo ended, and relations normalized.
That doesn't make me pro Castro...it means that I don't care about Castro one way or another. He's not my problem. It's the business of the Cuban people to deal with.
