It's done to ensure that sex does not provide pleasure to a woman and to ensure that she is visibly a virgin at her marriage. Since the results of the surgery can be infection and death, I can't see how hygiene is an acceptable reason for it.
There is no part of male circumcision that is designed to ensure that men receive no pleasure from sex, so yes, it is totally different.
Male and female circumcision is a social custom with no sound medical purpose Both practices are rooted in ancient times and were used to demonstrate a higher social status and conformity. As it relates to men, circumcision was once believed to reduce the harmful practice of masturbation.
What shocks me are the people who post here on city-data defending this barbarous act, like this one:
Especially when information exists so that everyone knows exactly how debilitating such FGM is: BBC News - Anatomy of female genital mutilation
FGM defenders: get a clue.
What shocks me are the people who are suddenly outraged be an ancient social practice because of a tweet.
Again, UNICEF reported statistical date in 2005 and again in 2013. In some nations, FMG has been performed on 60 % of the female population.
I can't believe we've found an issue that I agree with you on. This is a barbaric practice that is done for no other reason than to assure women get no pleasure out of sex. Often it is done without anesthesia. It's nothing more than horrific barbaric mutilation of women by a misogynistic culture.
Cultures- plural.
Back in 2005, UNICEF identified, through self reporting, that 60% of the female population of Gambia had been mutilated.

Considering all of the global humanitarian groups and medical organizations that have been opposed to FGM for decades, it should come as no surprise at all that this latest edict was met with outrage.
So it's no big deal then? Why don't you have it done then since it's able to be traced back to ancient times, is common and acceptable.
Who said it was no big deal?
I said it's an ancient custom that continues to be practiced in Africa and parts of the Middle East. Now all of a sudden, some here are outraged because of a tweet?
Those that support this procedure are repulsive. Those women who are defending it, please go have it done to yourself since you support.
Who on this thread supports the ancient practice of FGM?
