They pay money to the business owner to receive a product the buyer wants in return. Everyone wins.
Paying taxes? So what does anyone get for supporting some lazy fat ass? No value, no product, no service. Nothing but a bad attitude from some ungrateful drain on the tax payer.
Did you not read my OP? Academic standards would prevent lazy people from gaming the system. No, you would be supporting smart, hardworking people who maybe weren't so lucky to be born into a wealthy family with money for a top private university. These are the same people making discoveries and improving the quality of life for everyone.

Are you doing anything about it? Are you living off the land and not purchasing anything made or sold by a corporation?
We have free/nearly free college in California through our Community College system. Even at full price, you can get your first two years of college for under $400 a semester, then transfer to university.
Plus we have a network of grants/subsidies so Californians can get an A.A. degree for virtually free--the subsidies can also be used for rent/food so you get a virtual 2-year free ride.
The Liberal take: Provides a quality eduction to disadvantaged students--if they excel, they can qualify for scholorships/grants for university. And yes, I'm sure there are many students who benefit from this.
The Reality take: An amazing number of students who blew off high school (no degree or GED required) who start the grant/subsidy process, sign up for remedial English, remedial math and P.E. and slide for the next two years. At the end they can hopefully read/write at a higher level, but they have no degree or business skills. Just a two year free ride.
The program would be much better IF there were some accountability. You don't get the pay check for semester 2 unless you show progress from semester 1. But, as with everything else, somebody probably thinks that isn't "fair".
A major contributor to NYC's bankruptcy back in the 1970's was tuition free city schools. The other was the usual suspects (unions).
Could have nothing to do with the start of tax breaks for the rich or corporate america? Starting just before the loss of free higher education, when tax revinue came down so did the money for higher education. The colleges had to balance the loss by starting to charge tuition.

That's what I'm proposing; we would raise the requirements to be eligible.

Back in the 70's, NYC wasn't in great shape at all. Rampant violence and drug abuse, corruption, it was a mess.
I believe that having heavily subsidized or free state colleges would help reduce inequality. Education is an inequality killer, but student loans and debt is skyrocketing out of control. If you look at the Western European or Scandinavian countries, many of them have free college education, and as a result there is much less inequality in those societies.
In order to pay for the colleges, I'd cut the DoD's procurement budget 40%. Less new shiny toys that we don't need. I'd also increase the academic standards and requirements of state colleges. This would enable people who were born poor but are hardworking and smart to go to college and not be stuck in poverty. It wouldn't enable lazy people who just want to party.
Most Western European and Scandinavian countries don't have "big time" college athletics programs. If they eliminated college athletics in the United States, there would probably be enough extra cash to provide a free or low-cost education for all students. The priorities are a little screwed up when colleges pay their football and basketball coaches more than their presidents, chancellors, and professors.
