Another good point, we cannot run a qualified k-12 system and people want the government to then pay for those same poor performers to get free college as well.

The best education in the world had nothing to do with out of pocket expenses.
More is being spent per child educated now than at any time in our history and the results speak for themselves.
It would actually be a net loss, college sports, especially football and basketball provide way more in terms of revenue than they cost. The few popular men's sports fund the entire athletic programs at the school and provide scholarships to many.
