I believe that having heavily subsidized or free state colleges would help reduce inequality. Education is an inequality killer, but student loans and debt is skyrocketing out of control. If you look at the Western European or Scandinavian countries, many of them have free college education, and as a result there is much less inequality in those societies.

In order to pay for the colleges, I'd cut the DoD's procurement budget 40%. Less new shiny toys that we don't need. I'd also increase the academic standards and requirements of state colleges. This would enable people who were born poor but are hardworking and smart to go to college and not be stuck in poverty. It wouldn't enable lazy people who just want to party.

It still requires action on peoples part.

The left claimed it was too hard to get a proper voter ID and now we are to believe that they can show up every day for school, study and learn. What a waste our money.

It's toooooo hard

yeah everybody wants to cut the Dod's budget to support these "feel good" programs in the name of inequity. Wanna make college affordable? make the feds lower the interest rates on student loans.

Fed student loans' interest rates are already below market value. Why should students even have to borrow huge sums for tuition anyways?

Will you be reducing standards at these free colleges? Ironically enough City College in NYC had a free city college with strict academic criteria. It was a vehicle used by many Jews and other working class NYers. It yielded many Nobel Peace Prize winners and top talent.

During the 60s it became a target of black & Puerto Rican radicals who said the admission standards were unfair and that more Blacks and Puerto Ricans needed to be admitted. After some violent protests and occupations the school went to an open admission format and well the rest is history. It's probably marginally better than UDC now.

Then no thanks. There is no way I would ever support having to pay for my own tuition along with someone else's via taxes.

I would make the academic standards purely academic. Now, if it ends up being something like 99% white, then we might change it.

Are you still in college at a state college? Then your next year of school, under my plan, would be free if you pass the criteria.

Not to mention, your taxes do pay for federal student loans already..
