"Circuit Judge Terry Lewis on Friday ruled that the Legislature must draw up new congressional districts by Aug. 15. Lewis said that he will then order a special election later this year for those new districts."

Florida Judge Orders Special Session To Adopt New Voting Map

The Republican-controlled Florida legislature initially asked the judge to allow the November election to take place first, claiming that to change the illegally drawn districts before then would "cause horrific uncertainty" for voters and would be an extreme, unnecessary remedy. In other words, Judge, just let us get our guys in for one more term and then we'll make the revisions mandated by law.

Looks like the judge didn't fall for it.

uhm a circuit judge does not have that authority

district maps are approved by the us attorney generals office

in this case it would be one of these three offices:
U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida

In this case it does. In 2008 voters in Florida passed a referendum about the shape, compactness, etc about how the districts are drawn. The Judge isn't arguing that the districts violate federal law, but rather the state law.

Cool, too bad more judges do not put an end to the insanity. Ever look at district lines in North Texas, talk about drawn by a drunken sailor.
