The gift that just keeps on giving this holiday season. Between the CIA destroying tapes at the behest of the White House and the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran, the race is on. Will this Bush administration go quietly or will it have to be dragged out kicking a screaming?
White House involvement in the CIA's decision to destroy videotapes documenting severe interrogation techniques of suspected terrorists could constitute as many as six crimes, according to constitutional law expert Jonathan Turley.
"I think it's more than an inference at this point, which is one of the reasons there's a call for a special prosecutor," he said. "There are at least six identifiable crimes here, from obstruction of justice to obstruction of Congress, perjury, conspiracy, false statements, and what is often forgotten: the crime of torturing suspects.
So, tomorrow should be an interesting day when we all get to hear from US District Judge Henry Kennedy who order that the tapes be preserved.
Quote:
US District Judge Henry Kennedy, who in 2005 ordered that the US preserve "all evidence and information" regarding torture and other abuses, has scheduled a Friday hearing to investigate the destruction of the tapes.
It's a lot of crap IMHO. I WANT the terrorist prisoners tortured as much as possible until we get any and all information from them. The crap about them doing the same to our people if captured is ridiculous! They behead innocent people already! They have no qualms at all about torturing and killing. Please don't give me the garbage that "It will bring us down to their level". We don't go capture innocent reporters or civilians and harm them. We're talking about terrorists and I don't care how much they suffer.
If records were destroyed, I really don't care. A lot of hype by the MSM as far as I'm concerned.

This is not about the merits or pros and cons of torture or interrogation techniques it is about breaking the law and the destruction of evidence.
I don't know about you but I happen to value our laws and if I don't agree with them, I make an effort as a citizen to voice my concerns with my representatives.

I do the same but it hasn't been proven any laws were broken at least not at this point. If proven, then whoever is involved should be brought to task but I still believe this is something that's going to be shown to be way over blown.
You're right, I got off topic on this one. Sorry about that.
What I find odd is that everyone knew of the tapes and their existence for at least a full year or longer. While I don't give the Bush administration a pass on this if they did something criminal, what in the world is going on with our other leaders if they knew of tapes such as these and didn't move to have them confiscated before they were destroyed? Then after they were destroyed, everyone wants to dive in headfirst. Both sides seem way too political in all of their actions, with very few left on either side that are sincere in getting to the bottom of everything.

This is part of the reason why Congress has an 11% approval rating. It seems it is far less concerned with doing what is right than what is popular. While in my opinion it is just one more peek into the insight of one of the most authoritarian, secretive and inept administrations in my life time.
I must give credit where credit is due.
This administration has used the Ariel Sharon method of executive power, you create a never ending stream of scandal and impropriety and keep everyone downloading the latest daily scandal on their iPod and no one has time to focus on any one scandal to do much about it. The use of American's minuscule attention span to level of artistry.

Its also not been proven that Bush authorized the destruction of the tapes, and this OP is the first I've heard of such accusations.
Would be stupid for a president to order the destruction of tapes that the world knew existed.

Lets begin by listing all of those illegal scandals.
