What will be interesting to see, is the UN has authorized one more year, bringing us till the end of 2008.. What will happen after that?

How much credit will the next administration get, receive for "getting us out" when it will actually be time to get us out.

Will the Iraqi's hold onto these strenghts for 10-20 years down the road?

Will this newly found "democracy" in the area, also hold strenght?

Interesting times ahead.

The Iraqis will have a good start.
Now, Iraqi politicians will have to do their part in helping the Iraqi people.

The surge is only working in the sense that it is saving face. It is like throwing extra police at a murder scene. While they are there, crime goes down. As soon as they leave, it is back to the same elements in control. Genocide, torture, persecution of Christians and women go on unabated even now. The media is still singing the administration's line and lies. Our kids are dying in the end for nothing. There is no Iraq government, so who is suppose to take over after we leave? Funding should be cut off now.

Great news. They are coming back because they are restoring order and the Iraqi troops and maintaining security where they are operating.

Turkey is currently bombing Kurds in Northern Iraq, and the Brits are gettin outta dodge down in the south.

Areas that were formerly desegregated have witnessed low level ethnic cleansing, which is where much of the violence was centered. One of the reasons for this "quieting down" is that many of these areas are again segregated into various religious sects and divisions and the murder of the other factions.

So if we say that lessening violence is good, which it is, then by all accounts, life under Saddam would have been a success if measured by todays standards. As brutal as he was, the nationwide level of violence and slaughter of people was still far less than it is today.
