I was bored 1 night and did some reading:

Why is Argentina such a mess in 2014 but Poland seems to be taking care of business in 2014?

Except for the Falklands War; Argentina pretty much NEVER had any kind of war or "act of God" to deal with in 100 years.

Poland: OTOH; it was part of Russia, was its own country for about 20 years, Hitler and Russia cut it apart again, Poland had millions of its people murdered like maybe 1 on 5 but, many of those offed were the smart dudes and ladies, Warsaw was demo'ed by Hitler AND that country was under commie control for another 40 years but, it's been free for 20 years and, is doing pretty well.

Both countries are "Catholic" and both countries are pretty much pure "white" in race so why so much difference?

Maybe, one day, right-wingers will realize that the racial DNA composition of a country's population has nothing, zero, zilch, to do with a country's economic situation.

Argentina has been a mess for decades. Corrupt government, runaway inflation, dropping opponents alive from helicopters to their deaths.

And the irony is this. The largest ethnicity in Argentina isn't Spanish, but Italian. Many Spanish moved there, but Italians are the largest ethnicity in Argentina. Argentina has the 2nd largest Italian population in the world. About half of Argentina's population is of Italian descent, and 60% of the population has at least some degree of Italian ancestry. There is also a large German-Argentine population.

It has been like that for a while. The question is this: WHY?

Latin America in general has always had a tiny, yet extremely wealthy and powerful, elite. This leaves the region especially vulnerable to oscillating between far-right military coups and far-left socialist governments. When the Left comes back into power, instead of building the economy in a sustainable way, they just give away free stuff. Chavez in Venezuela is the most obvious example, but Argentina did it too. Of course, it is unsustainable and provokes yet another cycle of bankruptcy and right-wing reaction.

Brazil has come the closest to breaking the cycle. The socialists there have moderated their ideology and are trying to build the real economy. However, with the current slowdown in the country, it's unclear if populist political pressure will force the government to start spending money it doesn't have.

For Argentina to move forward it has to get over Peronism.
