I don't seek new country music out. That being said, I blame monthly attendance at the Honky Tonk's family day in my youth for my love of some country music, as well as my awesome two-step.

Hmmm. Most country music seems pretty apolitical to me. Thematically, most of it deals with subjects that express commonality between all people.

Sure there are a few jingoistic songs, but those are really the minority.

I'm obviously not a "lefty" but I think these kinds of questions are rather rudimentary. Country is a genre of music, MUSIC, what does that have to do with one's views of the Government? Absolutely nothing. I listen to some country, rock, classical, jazz, pretty much anything except for that gangster rap garbage or that screaming crap.

You can't make such generalizations about somebody's character based on their political leanings.

Lighten up. It's suppose to be a fun thread that complicates a stereotype.

I'm guessing you meant "based on their music-listening habits."

My love of country music stops right around 1980. Because I went to a rural high school with a very active FFA program, I got to listen to more modern country music every day and absolutely hate it. But I've got very fond memories of staying the night and my grandparent's place, and listening to my grandpa's old collection while we had breakfast.

Family Guy jokes aside, this is one of my favorites.

And really...mainstream, popular country has a pretty obvious bias. I'm not saying that's bad or wrong, but nobody's writing country songs about driving their Prius through the hills of Sonoma County on their way to the gun control rally.

...but now that I've said that I think I might.

Country is not so good, but bluegrass, I'll stop anything short of breathing to listen to that.

It should be noted that country music roots were in the Appalachians and South and also gave rise to folk music which often had a social consciousness in the hands of people like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger who started out as a serious student of the mountain folk and their music. Pete Seeger was a victim of the 1950s black list for his socialist politics. Another branch of country music that rose from black american roots was Jazz and its offspring called the blues from the blues we got rockabilly and then flat out rock and roll. Rock led to our modern pop music which is certainly not right wing or conservative!!!
