It never was a democracy. Its a constitutional republic, that is a representative govt. The people do not directly vote on legislation. In fact, on the federal level, the way the constitution originally organized the voting, the people voted only for their congressman. Senators were appointed by state legislatures, and the president was put in office by the electoral college. Judges are appointed. The design was actually to reduce the influence of the population, as they can be fickle. Women also couldn't vote and men couldn't vote until they were 21. IMHO, it should have stayed that way.

So we can officially admit that the condition we find our government in and its policies on the nation as a whole does not lie with the responsibility of the majority of its citizens but the puppet politicians and their masters.
