1) Have the perpetrator sincerely apologize to you, serve a long stint in prison being rehabilitated and learning how to be a better person, and then become a good member of society and compassionate human being upon their release or
2) Have them suffer a gruesome, violent death as a way to avenge your loss?
Number one could also hypothetically be a result of the perpetrator having some sort of brain surgery that "cures" the personality disorder that caused them to victimize somebody in the first place, turning them into a normal human being overnight.

Intentionally so. I think most people would prefer something in between, like them just spending life in jail or something, but I thought it would be interesting to compare the extremes.

Real Life is not about extremes ..... unless one is an Extremist.
No amount of cruelty, suffering, or violence is going to bring a loved one back. I would prefer to have someone who did something terrible spend the rest of their lives working on atoning for it as a productive member of society and compassionate human being. Some people will not decide for rehabilitation, or those who cannot that need care (violent and extremely mentally ill), and they will stay in a place they need.
I actually have experience with a "heinous crime". Eight two year old Aunt was stabbed 11 times in the chest with a serrated blade steak knife from her kitchen drawer. She was Murdered by the 14 year old son of her next door neighbor. He had mowed her lawn that afternoon and after she paid him - he decided it was not enough, so he robbed her and Murdered her. The boy received 13 months in a mental health facility and then was released.
I have no idea what happened to him, and neither does any other member of our family. It doesn't matter - because he went through the Judicial process and whether we think he did/did not receive a suitable punishment for stabbing our Aunt to death with such viciousness .... it is done. We could be bitter about it, but what is gained? Nothing can bring her back and nothing can change his "punishment" or even what he might do in the future. Life is not about Extremes and should not be about Bitterness, Grievance and Hate. You do the best you can and then move on. You don't forget, but you also don't wallow in the past that can't be changed.

I can't answer that question; never having been in that situation, I couldn't possibly answer it.

Have you ever been a victim of a minor crime? How you felt may give you a good idea.
