I was at my doctors office in the lobby for over an hour yesterday while Fox News was on, and i just had to laugh.

Gretchen Carlson's show was on. The show was chugging along pretty steadily, and i was surprised to find Carlson being pretty tame as the show went from topic to topic. She even gave the Michael Brown story and Al Sharpton's speech pretty fair and even coverage...you might even say that the coverage was favorable.

Then it turned to ISIS...and OH BOY!!!

By the time she was finished with the story, ISIS was practically a mile off of our shores sitting on aircraft carriers waiting to invade. I had to work really hard to stifle my laughter at the over the top hyperbole (even for Fox...and that's saying something).

My cellphone news feeds are chock full of "ISIS is bad mother-effer" stories. There was even a Yahoo story about our Special Operations command declaring ISIS to be a formidable fighting force. (which seems to be an even better reason to avoid a war that you'll lose...but i digress)

Then there's John McCain's strange admission that "the recent beheading of U.S. journalist James Foley by ISIS will HOPEFULLY WORK AS A CATALYST FOR THE ADMINISTRATION TO DEFINE A COMPREHENSIVE STRATEGY IN IRAQ and other parts of the world."

A catalyst? So now we form policy based on journalists that get killed while knowingly working in one of the most dangerous areas of the world?

I'm telling you...when these guys want their wars, they're relentless about getting 'em. I'm beginning to respect just how dastardly these hawks really are.

Afghanistan is winding down, and we're out of Iraq for the most part. It's getting harder to justify that 700 billion dollar a year defense budget, isn't it?

That is...unless we can find some other place to spend it. SMH
Why are you so terrified about killing terrorists.

People are pretty quick right now to forget all the terrorist groups the Assad regime has supported over the years including a lot of groups who were fond of bombing Israelis(and then there's Hezbollah) and all their violent actions in Lebanon(assassinations, car bombs, invasions). But in the end run though, the Assads really only ever cared about one thing--remaining in power rather than ideological expansion across the Middle East. But Assad would kill tens of thousands of his own citizens in a second to remain in power or use the existence of a group like ISIS cynically to divert attention away from his own regime, but on the other hand he's not crazy. They're crafty enough to use whatever means they can to hold onto power.

All this ISIS talk is eerily similar to the run-up to the Iraq War
Not really. Actually not at all. There are some similarities with Afghanistan though.

As long as America is seen as the world police, all this BS will continue.

Pols Will never give this role up voluntarily. The only way to stop it is to take the money away. Dems want the government to have MORE money and power.

So get used to it.

A couple of fruitless wars within a decade tends to do that...If you have any common sense.

This ISIS thing is so transparent in its desperation that it's pathetic. Gretchen Carlson went from being a reasonable news anchor to being a nutty sycophant in about 30 seconds. It was astounding to watch.

This country had better get it's War State under control before it sinks the country. It's become its own policymaking arm of our government almost independent of the executive branch that it's SUPPOSEDLY subordinate to.

I can tell you this. I have always opposed going to Iraq. Sadam was an a-hole, but now look at the instability in that region! I have never been a fan of using our military for nation building or for the numerous police actions around the world that the chicken hawks on both sides seem to love to drum up. Our military was used to protect our borders. PERIOD! Not to fight some other people's damn war!

It's not as vitriolic yet...but it's getting there.

I forgot about the Martin Dempsey situation...which is sort of an opposite Eric Shinseki episode.

Anyway, what are the similarities with Afghanistan?

In all honesty and in all fairness, I as a peace loving American just don't care about Iraq. Is it a crime?

I've seen many of my friends suffering from PTSD after coming back from war. I've seen several young folks (perhaps my age or even couple of years younger than me) without leg or arms in VA hospital.

I had a loved one served in the Marine Corps 10+ years ago. I remember the feeling every single time he went away. My bro was considered a peace time Marine. He did three ops overseas and it really was enough for my family.

I simply cannot imagine sending other people's brothers to war. My conscious doesn't allow me to do it. For iraq and Iraq people? I don't think so.

I pray for peace for poor suffering people in Iraq, but sending other people's brothers to war? No thank you. Plus, America simply cannot afford another war. This is reality.

This isn't about Democrats vs Republicans.

Will some of you folks PUHLEEEEEZE stop looking at every damn situation through this stupid left/right prism? It's BIGGER than that!

And as said before, I'm seeing more and more people like yourself all the time...people just aren't buying it anymore.

Not having a full fledged war is starving the military industrial complex and not doing anything to quench the thirst of a segment of American populace that can't do without aggression in foreign lands.

I have no plans to kill anyone, nor have I been invited to do so.

If you're so tough, you KNOW where the airport is.
