WASHINGTON — A coalition of unions, members of Congress, progressive groups and others wrote a joint letter to President Barack Obama calling for drastic changes to local police forces around the country after the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
The letter, which was distributed via an ad in the Washington Post, calls for a demilitarization of police forces, an effort to increase diversity, and the establishment of a “federal czar” to promote “the professionalization of local law enforcement.”
There's a fair number of police departments already under federal consent decrees. There needs to be some level of professionalization and definitely needs to be demilitarization, which was allowed and funded by the feds. So how is this proposal any more statist than the status quo?
Cities, counties and states would save a bundle if they nationalize all police.
All LE becomes Fed and act like the FBI, CIA, etc.
Then DHS can just hand out the bearcats and all other military gear and not have to worry about "grants".
Make Holder head of all the LE and they take orders from him.
Then all pay and benefits become taxpayer responsibilities.
And Holder could make sure that all LE's are diverse.
Sure..it would work out just fine and dandy wouldn't it ?

Get back to me when some legislation hits the floor for a vote.

We do not need the local police department governed by Washington, not even sure it would be Constitutional to do so.
Each individual law enforcement agency at the State and Local levels should determine their own needs when it comes to military style equipment what may be a need in LA will not be the same as what is needed in Billings.

Are you so sure the so called 'militarization' of police departments was not intended for, or used for calling for federal intervention?
I can hear the statists in the federal government now, telling us how they need to save us from the 'militarization' of police departments after the feds militarized those police departments in the first place.
Think about that one for a bit and get back to us.
I'm not agreeing that police agencies should be federalized, and neither is this proposal really. What I'm saying is that local police departments have failed to maintain any real internal oversight and thus there are many already under federal scrutiny via consent decrees. At the same time the police have been gifted with military grade equipment from the feds. The states need to step up and institute some professionalism guidelines. Otherwise the feds will have to because that camel's nose is already in the tent.
