Should politicians be responsible for their tweets and social media posts? Rick Perry's Twitter sent out an inappropriate (& inaccurate) joke image about an opponent and then followed up an hour later saying it was "unauthorized" and the Governor did not condone it. Both the tweet and retraction were sent by an authorized user of his account and I suspect Perry knew nothing about the tweet or the retraction. Politicians (right or left) should be responsible for anything sent out by their official social media accounts, especially when they are written in the first person, and not deny responsibility by blaming an underling -or have an underling pretending to be you blaming an underling.

Yup. If they give out the pw to the account then they should realize that whatever it tweeted is tweeted in their name.

Condone or condemn the owner gave out their information and should deal with the consequences.
If Perry got hacked then that's another matter but he didn't say that.
So that means he gave out his pw to other people to post in his name.

Yes, they should have tighter controls.

No, it's a free speech issue. No one takes an oath before they tweet.

Besides, I think everyone should be given the opportunity to look stupid in public.

Or smart. I'm no Perry fan, but he did the right thing in the case of this tweet, and in fact, he's been doing the right thing throughout this indictment. I like him better for it.

It may be free speech but every action has a consequence. All politicians and individuals should realize that and pay close attention to what they tweet and who has their pw.

That's totally true.

Same thing as what a person says in interviews, or in campaign ads, or in op-eds or...

As I said, I *like* seeing how people act in public, it's critical information.

Yup. If they or their designated minions simply HAVE to use it, then they've bought the responsibility & consequences. Personally I find politicians using instant media a train wreck waiting to happen, but they're as free to make fools of themselves in public as the rest of us.

They already are. They're only a one www post from being discredited, humiliated and, most importantly, a few citizen's vote awayfrom being jobless .
