Dunkin' Donuts Worker's Death Reveals The True Cost Of Our Low-Wage, Part-Time Economy

Quote:
A New Jersey woman died earlier this week trying to catch a few hours of sleep between jobs, a chilling reminder of the struggle low-wage workers, particularly women, face making ends meet.

Police found Maria Fernandes dead in her car on Monday night, parked in a convenience-store parking lot in Elizabeth, N.J., according to a police press release. Fernandes, 32, was wearing a Dunkin’ Donuts uniform when she was found. A friend and fellow employees told officials she worked as many as four jobs, said Lt. Daniel Saulnier, a spokesman for the Elizabeth police department.

Authorities are waiting on a toxicology report to determine the exact cause of death, but Hazmat investigators found that fumes in Fernandes’ car were caused by a gasoline can that had spilled in the back, according to the release. Friends told police that Fernandes kept gas in her car to avoid running out of gas when traveling between jobs. And she often slept in parking lots to get a few hours of rest between jobs, authorities said.

“It is a very sad story and really tragic, and it shines a light on what is a real problem, particularly for low-wage workers, today,” said Elizabeth Watson, senior counsel and director of workplace justice for women at the National Women’s Law Center.

So here we have a women working 4 jobs motivated to better herself living on 3 hours of sleep a day and dies.

All so that Corporate Lobbyists, Investors and Banks can continue to reap the world from their Foreign and Domestic Economic policies they wrote up to pass on to their puppets in DC.

All those things are by-products of a centrally planned economy. Stop looking at the state as a provider and more like the parasite that it is.

So someone taking a nap in a car is now to be blaimed on minimum wage?

I've taken a nap in my car on very busy hectic work days and I make far more than minimum wage, I guess I need the government to give me some more money now as well.

"I told (her) she could get a better job, but she said she didn't want to work in an office," Culhane said.

We all must learn to accept the consequences of our choices. Apparently this is the lifestyle she CHOSE. Unfortunately, it was not a wise choice.

Twisting the facts, aren't we?

"Police found Maria Fernandes dead in her car on Monday night, parked in a convenience-store parking lot in Elizabeth, N.J., according to a police press release. Fernandes, 32, was wearing a Dunkin’ Donuts uniform when she was found. A friend and fellow employees told officials she worked as many as four jobs, said Lt. Daniel Saulnier, a spokesman for the Elizabeth police department."

"Fernandes worked at multiple Dunkin’ Donuts, including one at Newark Penn Station, Saulnier said. Though she wore the same uniform for each, these were technically separate jobs. Dunkin’ Donuts confirmed that the outlets where she worked were owned by different franchisees and that the different owners didn't know she was working at multiple restaurants. Fernandes worked as little as 10 hours a week at one franchise and as many as 40 hours a week at another."

Well fortunately the reception of this thread was better accepted over at another forum with 13 pages that went into more detail of why the lower end economy is the way it is than a simple wave of the hand and shrug.

It seems that the movers and shakers of our economy that own our government do not want to take any accountability for the condition our country is in.

The say government is the problem and not the solution and then turn their backs and run to DC with a bag full of gold to give to politicians for their solutions.

No. You missed the entire point of this article.

Don't keep a can of gasoline in the trunk of your car.

I don't have any sympathy for her "hard work" whatsoever. Tens of thousands of people across the country work these jobs and they aren't going to die because they don't keep gasoline in the trunk of their car. She didn't die because she had 4 jobs and worked to death, she asphyxiated on the gas fumes. Give me a break.

Amazing what libs want to spin these day. Huffington Post is full of spinners and propagandists.
