I dont think you are wrong in saying that they want that image, but outside of the Michael Vick's of the world, no one knows that these players have committed the crimes until they dont see them on the field on Sunday and then google why they arent there.
ABC, NBC, and CBS dont really cover this stuff.
What difference does it make if anyone outside of the offending party and the corporation knows about the violations or not? They are violations nonetheless.
You break your contract, you suffer the consequences. When or if the public finds out about it has no bearing on the issue.

Im going to try this again.
im not asking people about the contract itself of if the NFL "Can",but whether or not the NFL should.
as i said in my example, congress can levy a 70% tax on people, im pretty sure you agree they can do that. but whether they can or can not do it has nothing to do with whether or not you believe they should do it.
As for the first part of your post, it matters to the practicality of it all. If you are arguing that the arrest with out league punishment would hurt your bottom line, there has to be some proof to it. These arrest dont hurt the NFL's bottom line, they had a record arrest in 2012 and ratings have gone no where but up.
If you can fire a TV cook show star for something somebody said she said 30 years ago about a robbery suspect
Yes u can suspend a player a few games
Its no longer right and wrong its who has the right to do wrong

I'm pretty sure the morality clause existed before 2012 though.
Should NFL players be suspended for Personal troubles
Of course they should be penalized. Some of these 'heroes' make 500,000 dollars a game.
People pay to see them play, they live in a virtual dream land, are given everything to play
15-20 minutes on game day. I remember when a back-up QB qualified for a pension after
5 years and never entered a regular season game. He did play later in his career, and was
actually pretty good. Point is, the bigger they are, the bigger they fall.
If I'm the owner of a football team, and my player does something totally wrong, I would Penalize them. They represent me.
It's like a soldier doing porn movies withuniform on. Or anybody with uniforms. Public servants, etc....
Why would anyone even question whether they should be suspended or not? Of course they should, if by no one else but the owner. Company policies are just that. We are not talking marital problems, financial problems, etc. but if they commit a felony or are accused of it, sure they should be suspended. If for no other reason than, they are supposed to be setting an example for our youth, the young people who look up to them.
