A Dubai Air chartered jet with 98 Americans and 2 Canadians on board was forced to land in Iran after taking off from Afghanistan according to Washington Post.

An aircraft chartered by coalition forces in Afghanistan, en route from Bagram air base to Dubai, landed Friday in Bandar Abbas, Iran, after Iranian officials questioned its flight plan, U.S. officials said.

What the heck are they thinking?
Do they REALLY want to head down this very dangerous road?

It's just a commercial airliner. There appears to be a question about its flight plan. Look at a map and you'll see that flights from Afghanistan to Dubai pass over Iran.

The plane had been contacted by Iranian air traffic controllers, who instructed it to return to Afghanistan and file the correct plan. When the pilots informed the Iranians they did not have enough fuel to return to Bagram, they were asked to land.
I'm sure the mountain from this mole-hill will continue to grow as this thread progresses.

Outcome:
*Plane refuels, then proceeds to Dubai, or
*Plane refuels, returns to Afghanistan and straightens out its flight plan, then proceeds to Dubai, overflying Iran as countless flights do every day (Iran is a signatory to the IASTA, or International Air Services Transit Agreement)

Let's sit back and watch the low end neo-con war mongering mouth-breathers demanding the total destruction of Tehran....

Sorry to burst the bubble of those eager to breathlessly present this as a major international issue, but so much for this complete non-story:
Quote:
A chartered aircraft carrying about 100 Americans from the U.S. airbase at Bagram, Afghanistan, has left for Dubai after it was diverted to Iran because of issues with its flight plan, a U.S. official and the Fly Dubai airline said on Friday.

"It ... has taken off," the U.S. official said of the aircraft. The plane had left Bagram for Dubai several hours late but failed to update its flight plan, the official said.
