TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — The federal government wasted millions of dollars in building a housing project for Border Patrol agents in Arizona near the Mexican border, spending nearly $700,000 per house in a small town where the average home costs less than $90,000, a watchdog report found.

The analysis by the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general found that U.S. Customs and Border Protection overspent by about $4.6 million on new houses and mobile homes in the small town of Ajo southwest of Phoenix.

got to watch the way this report is worded

the average home in Ajo is VALUED about 90k

but when BUILDING at 110/per square...a TINY 1000 sf home would be AT LEAST 110k....220k for a 2000sf home

also you end up spending more.. when its a ""Gotta have now"""... as opposed to 'wait the market out and spend sparingly "

The Border Patrol is a farce. They are used as an excuse to stop US citizens and illegally search their cars for drugs.
The Border Patrol has never been about stopping illegals from entering the US. The fact that we currently have 60 million plus people in this country who have entered illegally is proof of that. If you do not believe the statistics, then count the number of foreign born people in the US and subtract the quota of legal immigrants.

That's less than the median priced used home here, new start at over $800,000.
I'm sure the homes averaging 90k there are small, and old. Being "out of the way" and probably having to pay a lot more for a fast timeline, plus the way the seller of the land probably stuck it to Uncle on the price that doesn't seem much out of line to me. Lastly, like schools and government office buildings, federal regulations require a lot more expensive design and materials than a normal house for employee housing.

Do you prefer militias to patrol the border, then? Or local cops? Either could just as easily search cars for drugs. I'm not sure all militias would be quick to turn the drugs over, though….

No, what I prefer is for the Border Patrol to be used in the context of what its purpose should be, and that is to be stationed on the nations borders and to insure that only US citizens cross into the US.

The war against drugs is a farce being perpetrated on the American public and needs to end.
The government has no jurisdiction to tell people what drugs they may or may not use.

In fact the government and the worlds largest banks are the real power behind illegal drugs and make hundreds of billions of dollars from the illegal drug trade.

Sounds like an Arizona contractor in Ajo was well-connected with his Congresspeople.

That was my very first thought as well and just a guess, but I would say that contractor "lost" a lot of money playing cards with that politician at private card games
