The Taliban very well may be guilty of this. While I would not say definitely, it is very much plausible as Bhutto wanted to push democratic reforms, something that the Taliban would rather not see.
There are a lot of people who stood to gain something by the assignation of Bhutto, but it wasn't the people it would seem.
re Bhutto, this is horrible. She was a great leader.
great leader? Not by a long shot, she stole a lot of money from that country and corruption flourished under her. However it is always unfortunate when political candidates are assassinated in this manner. People should have the right to choose.
Umm for those thinking the Taliban did this, you do realize they are in Afghanistan and could care less about Pakistan in this regard. But I am positive Bush and is elk will some how blame this on the crazy islamo-ascist "evil doers" lol.

While I realize that the Taliban proper are in Afghanistan, they also have a great deal of support from the local populations in western Pakistan who are quite sympathetic to their cause. Much of the resistance to Musharraf has apparently been from more fundamentalist railing against his association with the US and the west in general.
To be quite frank, I am surprised Musharraf has managed to survive as long as he has.
As it stands now, Bhutto's assassination would serve what purpose and to who? Hence why I ask, Qui Bono
Speculators fear that the instability in Pakistan will spread to neighboring nations which do export petroleum. Basically, its just an excuse to further steal from the American consumer.
And for further U.S. intervention in the Mideast, just as the Neo-Conservative agenda advocates.
I would guess anyone or someone who didn't want her to reclaim any of her power, control and/or influence.
And it is difficult to speculate with so many at large.
Indeed! While we may scoff at the whole notion of CIA involvement, we do have to consider that Musharraf does play ball the way we want him to. This of course is one of the reasons he is so despised in his own country and several attempts have been made on his life in the past year.
There is Musharraf himself, which is quite obvious.
Then there are the fundamentalist elements who view democratic reforms as something akin to flushing a Qu'ran down the toilet.
Indeed many players, but again, whether she was corrupt or not, the alternative being Musharraf, I think corruption seems to be the order of the day in Pakistan. The unfolding of this situation has the potential to become quite serious for the entire region.
