Two thoughts...and i am no fan of police behavior, on balance, but....
When a cop looks at you, points his cannon at you, and tells you to drop your weapon, you probably want to do so. I am (dangerously) assuming that police gave the man sufficient opportunity to put the weapon down.
But, why do we have these officers armed with spray and Taser guns, and yet they seem to pull out the big stuff right away when there is a problem?
Why not just taze the guy, remove the weapon, and move along?
I guess I don't get the shooting protocol which police feel is warranted.
For the same reason you don't bring a knife to a gunfight. When a gun is exhibited you pull your gun. Simple!

Yup, pretty simple.
If I'm carrying a dozen roses and they say drop the weapon,
I'm gonna drop em before I try to explain that they're just roses.
Darn right I would do the same, let them do their job and everyone goes home.
I saw the way the ggun looked and I would say if I were a police officer I would look at the situation as me being outgunned and just as the officers did give him a chance to drop it and if they don't you take them down, the situation is way to fluid to do anything else.
As a retired LAPD police officer, I think I know about the changes in law enforcement technique over the past 20-30 years. Most of us know the difference between a modern BB gun and a real firearm.
That's not what they sell at walmart. It's a disingenuous image pulled from A MEXICAN WEBSITE: CO2 AIRGUNS | MEXICO
Really? I may disagree with you on many topics but you have my Kodos for serving in one of the toughest police departments in the US. I know I lived in LA for a while and the place is a nut house, I would not would wanted to serve there.
Thanks for your Service Ed.
Nah, he was shot in the back, not much else is certain...shooting someone in the back is murder, and a cowardly murder at that.
Only if you want it to be. If someone presumably holding a gun is facing other shoppers then he is a clear threat. Guess they didn't teach you that in your police academy. Oh ! You didn't go to one?
What's his being black have anything to do with anything? Would the outcome had been different had he been green?
I run in some hardcore gun rights circles, and the black guys will not open carry (totally legal here) unless with white men.
I don't blame them. A black man with a gun (or gun-like object) is going to be treated differently than me. If I were to open carry (I don't) I'd get asked my name and if I'm a felon...a black version of me would at best be bum rushed and stomped.

I did - LAPD, and what you're posting is absolute crap.
