Funny, the states that need it the most are opting out.

Don't forget to teach your kids that sharing is not allowed, if the schoold has such an idiot rule!

How are they seasoning them in school? I wouldn't eat some plain steamed stuff either.

You know, they've got to have some garlic, some olive oil or butter,
some cheese, some pepper, lemon juice, some spice.
Give those veggies some pizzaz.
I would kill someone for some well seasoned beet greens

As far as fruits are concerned, I'd stick with apples. What they don't eat, make into applesauce and then apple cakes and muffins.
Most schools just microwave this stuff. It comes from a food service company.
The OP happens to work at one of the few schools that actually cook meals on campus.

The rest..microwave.
And once the food is given to the kids it cannot go back to the school.
It must be thrown out.

At one school where I work the janitor saves the fruit (whole apples only) and teachers with horses take it home.

But the kids are not eating it. They are tossing it. It's a shame the amount of uneaten food that is thrown out daily.

Schools get their Fed $$ by giving kids these meals whether they want them or not.

A happy medium would be nice... a small cup of grapes and sharp cheddar, or plain applesauce + a sandwich on wheat, rather than whole mealy, flavorless apples for kids who likely haven't eaten a piece of fresh fruit in years.

You have to teach yourself to enjoy simple, healthy foods once you've been subsisting on junk. I know, since I allowed myself to go down that path. And you can't remodel a willful child's palate with 1 meal a day. Combine that with iffy quality on the fruit itself - come on, you all know commercial strawberries and Red Delicious are tasteless out of season - and it was bound to fail.

It does kind of crack me up, though. We wail about food insecurity, but what we really have is spoiled pickiness.

Drudge Report had a few news blurbs about this -

Looks like microwaves are out, muffins are out, no cupcakes, no bake sales. theres more but thats off the top of my head.

Can someone tell me - was this by order of Moochy Obooboo or was it the Feds liked her idea and then made it law?
Who actually is responsible for enforcing this food law?

And when Moochie and her husband leave the job in 2016, will these food laws go away and can we please get back to normal?

Its so Orwellian! worse even. Giving you all these rules over food. sheesh!!!!

Why are they tossing it?

I hear from so many posters that their children come home from school 'starving', which is going to lead to overeating at home.

If the kids were really starving, they wouldn't be throwing away food.

I've been thin my entire life. When I was in grade school, we brought our own lunches, and purchased either milk, chocolate milk, or orange juice (if we had the money to do so).

My lunch was usually peanut butter and jelly. No cookies; no crackers; maybe a piece of fruit.

I don't recall feeling 'starved' when I got home at 2:30 or 3:00pm.
And, yes, we actually had recess twice a day, outside; playing games, jumping rope, etc., otherwise known today as physical exercise.

IF these kids are throwing their food away, it's most likely due to conservative brainwashing from their parents.

Starving kids do not reject food. They're just spoiled brats.

If your schools refuse ANY Federal money, you can run your SCHOOLS your way, as well!
Personally, I would be willing to pay more in local taxes to support the schools, and kick the Feds out of OUR educational system completely!
Hey, if the Federal government is running it, you are already paying for it with taxes. My whole problem with this federal program is it is just another step toward more socialism. Why is it up to me to pay for the free breakfast for the kid down the street, whose parents don't work and are on food stamps? It's about damn time people have to pay their own way, if they can't pay for school lunches, don't have kids. Pretty simple when you stop to think about it.
