The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms is 2 to 21 days. Humans are not infectious until they develop symptoms.
This bit is sorta important. Because the virus is so aggressive once symptoms set in, it just doesn't spread that well in first world countries, presumably less so in an environment so focused on health and cleanliness as the military. We have examples of hemorrhagic fevers that are as infectious (although not as deadly) as Ebola making it to the US, and they rarely go beyond the index patient.
We're fighting it THERE so we don't have to fight it HERE.
While we are infinitely more capable in the United States of successfully fighting Ebola than are the countries currently affected, we don't want to be forced to fight Ebola within the United States. Not only does it strain our resources, but the potential for panic and the economic impact are both consequences we don't want to deal with.
Our military support in those countries could potentially make the difference between this outbreak continuing to be a regional outbreak in Africa, or a global outbreak.
I HOPE that you're right. It will just surprise me if our military can make much of a dent in the outbreak.
I also hope that we don't end up fighting it here as well as there.

The answer is to isolate it over there, forbid all travel into and out of the area, and allow it to burn itself out.
That is virtually impossible to do, especially if they are left to their own decides. You'd need a lot of advanced technology and a large force of people...hey wait, that would be kinda like the US military!
Just reading today that they're doing a 3-day quarantine in one city and they can't even maintain that because the people are saying that they don't keep 3 days of food in their house and need to go elsewhere everyday to find food.

Most Americans don't have 3 days worth of food in their house. Remember all the dumbasses after sandy that ran out of food and water within a couple of days? They even had a few days warning to prepare themselves.
"A spokesman for the government in Guinea said on Thursday that eight bodies were found two days after a group of health workers and journalists went missing in the country. The journalists and officials came under attack near the southern city of Nzerekore, close to the Liberian border. One journalist was able to escape and later told reporters that she could hear villagers looking for her. The Associated Press said that the group "was doing disinfection and education on prevention methods" when it went missing."
I wonder why people still think its worth it to try and help any predominately black poor nation when everytime we do so, it seems to be a wasted effort that never improves things for the longterm and also instead of being grateful, blacks often repay our efforts to help them with violence, rape and murder.
Its damn sad that pretty much every major effort undertaken to help black nations after some disaster, you always need a significant security force to protect aid workers from the very people you're trying to save. What's the point of trying to help people like these when instead of being happy and thankful, they turn on you often violently and often complain you're not doing enough no matter how hard you try?
And also isn't helping them pretty much enabling them to continue the behavior that got them so screwed up in the first place? Namely having too many babies without the resources to support them? Maybe they should start learning the hard way that having too many kids is a bad thing and that there won't be outside help to support them anymore when they keep pumping out kids like there's no tomorrow.

I'm going with - When you don't have transportation it's hard to carry more than 3 days worth of food, if you are walking in the heat.
