I'm not all that up to date on Pakistan. But it appears that the Taliban and Al Qaeda are gaining strength there. Just as a casual observation, it appears to me that they are less interested in Iraq and Afghanistan and more interested in Pakistan, and maybe that is because Pakistan has nukes.
Anybody think this might be their focus now? Take over the least stable country in their region that has actual firepower that would give them lots of capability they have not had before?

I think that there 600,000 strong army can handle the security of there nukes unless they split up into two factions, that idea has been spreading around latley.
That is what I was wondering about. I don't think the Taliban or Al Qaeda could take over the country by any means, but if they were able to push things into enough chaos, they may be able to get a faction in control that will be friendly to them.
I think they've just holed up there because it's a relatively safe haven. There are enough people there who will give them shelter just because Musharraf looks like a US lapdog. I don't think there's any sort of effort to gain major traction there at this time. I think they're just waiting, hoping the US will pullout of Afghanistan so they can go back in and fill the void.
I'm not a student of Pakistan, either, but it's worth noting that part of its NW border region (verging on Afghanistan) is known as the Federally Administered Tribal Area, and is only "loosely" even a part of Pakistan at all. So on top of the already contentious nature of this whole huge country itself (note the Bhutto assasination, etc) there is a further "layer" of inacessibilty in that the "Tribal Area" usually is "off limits" to most Pakistani government oversight. Makes it virtually impossible for unwanted "outsiders" to get a picture of what's going on there...or to "oversee" the Tribal Area's border with Afghanistan...
