Stores are open on sunday because of consumer demand. It really is that simple.

One day of the week without the shopping craze... Is that too much to ask?

I am all for blue laws as opposed to unlimited commercialism that supposedly can't survive one day without pushing its products to consumers, and it has nothing to do with religion. I swear. lol
Why should you get to tell other people when they can and cannot shop? If you don't want to deal with the crowds on city streets and the traffic around shopping malls, feel free to stay home. That's your choice. But you don't get to make that choice for everyone else.

And your entire premise is completely wrong. Crime doesn't stop just because it's Sunday. People don't magically stop getting sick just because it's Sunday. Power outages don't stop just because it's Sunday.

You can enact all the silly control freak laws you want but there will still be a ton of people who aren't sitting at home with their family.

I have a neighbor from Germany who feels much as you do. However, I like our more libertarian approach here. It bugs me not to be able to go into Hobby Lobby on a Sunday when DH can come with me to choose some home decor. (I realize this is HL's choice, but it's still a pain.) Why shouldn't one be able to go to a restaurant on Sunday? When I was in Germany on a Sunday, some Turks were working in the restaurant where we ate dinner. So in part, it's hypocrisy. "Real" Germans (and that's how they see it there) don't work on Sundays, but the business owner wants the 7 day a week business, so s/he employs people who are members of a minority group that don't have a hangup about working on Sunday so s/he can stay open.
Well, its funny feeling when as a liberal I find myself siding with the owners of chick fillet or hobby lobby yet I can't help but think that one day a week should be committed to family life and relaxing other than shopping.

Bergen county New Jersey, pretty affluent area in new Jersey instituted blue laws because people were getting tired of traffic around the paramus mall and other big stores on Sundays that are supposed to be more relaxed than weekdays.

Liberal in me agrees with you that we should leave it up to the MUNICIPALITIES or COUNTIES to decide, am not for forcing anybody to close the store on Sunday, yet a law takes the pressure of some retailers who would want to close on sunday but can't since their competition stays open...

America is crazy in its constant pursuit of places to spend the money and I think family life suffers in the process. Blue laws and Sunday slowdown of the economy helps to reverse that trend. Families are more important that sales, aren't they?

If something seems very simple to you it is probably only because you understand it.

What if you don't have a family you want to spend time with? Your argument is baseless (such strawman game!) and nobody is stopping families from spending time together now, however and whenever they want. You seem to just want it to be controlled and limited to Sundays for some wacky reason.

Do you know what a lot of people want to do on Sunday? Work. Not everyone feels like a slave and they actually enjoy their jobs.

Why should only retail stores be closed on Sundays?

Why shouldn't all nonessential businesses be closed on Sunday?

Amusement parks, gas stations, boat marinas, movie theaters, restaurants, etc. - all closed on Sundays.

The only ones working on Sunday should be hospital employees, safety forces and utility workers.

Oh, and Sunday football/sports and all Sunday television programming has gotta go. All of the people who work in those industries should be home with their families on Sunday. Right?

I don't know one Christian who bemoans the fact that people have to work on Sunday so they can stop to get something to eat after church and then go home to watch the game on TV.

Considering that the day of rest is Saturday, it would be quite inconvenient to lose Sunday as a shopping day.

Well Sunday isn't the Sabbath for one.

Another thing, we work more hours, more days, for less money then most other countries. Its just who we are with the puritanical work ethic
