It may or may not serve as a deterrent to others, but it will surely be a deterrent to that person ever harming anyone again.

I disagree with life sentences. If the purpose is to remove a criminal from society, the surest way to do that is to kill them quickly and without remorse.

Mental illness plays no part in it. Those who kill without justifiable cause, and particularly those who kill in a heinous way, should be themselves dispatched without hesitation or opportunity to appeal.
