Sigh. Kirdik, I am well aware that Australia is a continent. Apparently you are unaware that the united states is not in fact a continent. Which is kind of my point, we have tons of borders, both to the north and south, the idea of setting up soldiers every 10 feet or so doesn't even remotely consider the costs associated, or that those soldiers could be exposed to it and bring it back in as well.
Overall the idea of sealing ourselves in is not reasonable. Obamas point that we need to solve this problem at the source by helping people is very valid. Even more importantly, its the right thing to do.
We can't seal ourselves hermetically of course but we could keep the incident rate far lower, potentially close to zero, while a vaccine or cure is developed, tested, and manufactured. There are several promising candidates for the former. Saying we can't perfectly protect ourselves so we shouldn't try at all is a logical error at best and intentionally intellectually dishonest at worst.
Now, your "its the right thing to do" point is a valid moral argument. However, there is a balance to be struck between helping people in Africa and protecting our own country. Obama is on the far side of doing very little to protect the nation he is President of, and it's really a problem. A good place to strike a balance is to continue to let healthcare workers who want to go to help in Africa, continue to provide aid/money to fight the issue, but to also require a mandatory 21 day quarantine for people entering the country from the effected region. Implementing a 21 day mandatory quarantine goes a long way to protecting ourselves and doesn't represent completely abandoning Africa to the breakout either.
Cuomo and Christie have the right idea, and hopefully more governors will follow in the absence of responsible or competent action from the federal executive branch.
My problem with her is she was willing to risk her life to treat Ebola patients in Africa, but she's not willing to give up 21 days of freedom for Americans. Very strange story. Seems like she likes the attention more than anything.
There are, come to think of it, a number of photos (posted in the news) of her smiling widely at the camera in Africa. I have no doubt that her intentions of helping were good, but there is not only a bit of camera love in there too.
there is no reason to think she was exposed to a contagious disease. Anyway it all comes down to what the law and the medical experts say and both are on her side.
"Some risk includes any of the following:
In countries with widespread Ebola virus transmission: direct contact while using appropriate PPE with a person with Ebola while the person was symptomatic."
"Quarantine
Quarantine in general means the separation of an individual or group reasonably believed to have been exposed to a quarantinable communicable disease, but who is not yet ill (not presenting signs or symptoms), from others who have not been so exposed, to prevent the possible spread of the quarantinable communicable disease."
"Asymptomatic individuals in the some risk category should have direct active monitoring until 21 days after the last potential exposure. Public health authorities may consider additional restrictions (see Table) based on a specific assessment of the individual’s situation. Factors to consider include the following: intensity of exposure (e.g., daily direct patient care versus intermittent visits to an Ebola treatment unit); point of time in the incubation period (risk falls substantially after 2 weeks); complete absence of symptoms; compliance with direct active monitoring; the individual's ability to immediately recognize and report symptom onset, self-isolate, and seek medical care; and the probability that the proposed activity would result in exposure to others prior to effective isolation."
Ms. Hickox is an asymptomatic individual in the some risk category. She has direct active monitoring. That is a form of quarantine.
It is her responsibility to comply with that monitoring and isolate herself immediately if she develops a fever (which is exactly what Ms. Pham did). Her announcing she would "break quarantine" is unprofessional.
Look at the polls - close to 80 percent Americans want travel bans and quarantines.
He's dooming the Dems in the election.
The question is - is he just that stupid or does he have a plan?
Not dooming 100% - he's actually providing a pretty huge opportunity for other Democrats, people like Cuomo who buck a President in their own party to do right by their constituents come out of this looking really, really good -- far more so even than Republicans who do so because they are risking blow-back from within their own party by going against a sitting Democratic President.

I think everyone here should read this! This is what so many of you are missing. The state, in an effort to resolve this with Kaci Hickox, was proposing to use these same guidelines and she rejected them! Unprofessional indeed.
