The 40 hours work week is going to be a relic of the 20th century soon. Automation is taking everyone's jobs and no one is immune. Even highly educated professions such as physician/surgeons will be replaced in the future by robots that can do the same surgeries far cheaper, never get tied, make far less mistakes, and offer up faster recovery times. A profession like a pharmacist is going to be extinct soon--most major cities and hospitals in them already have automated drug dispensing machines that fill orders with >99% accuracy and never get tired. In less than 10 years, Medco's 100% automated pharmacy dispensing system has already filled its 500 millionth pill:
No one is immune from automation. What is the country going to do when the concept of full time employment (40 h/wk) no longer exists? Either less people have jobs, which will create economic and social chaos, or more people work less hours. There's a brave new world coming.
