And here we see the left's inexplicable need to lie even when it's not necessary. The actual number is $806 billion according to the CRS, and would make the point perfectly well. But no, they can't resist the urge to prevaricate and nearly quadruple the number.

The other thing is that the Iraq war could have done some good for us, had we not precipitously withdrawn. It's just dumb to compare that to something like spending on Swedish massages for rabbits.

You might be thinking of William Proxmire (D, WI) who used to issue an annual 'Golden Fleece Award' for wasteful spending. According to his Wikipedia entry, one of the awards was issued to the FAA for a study of:

The U.S. government spent $468 million to buy and refurbish 20 older C-27A airplanes from Alenia, a unit of Italy's Finmeccanica SpA , but later canceled the program because a lack of spare parts was severely limiting their availability for military use.

Military Buying Italian Planes At $50 Million A Piece . . . And Sending Them Directly To “Boneyard” | JONATHAN TURLEY

$50 million a pop, and sent directly to the 'boneyard' in Arizona. There had to be some payoffs from the Italians for this, and meanwhile back at the ranch, the Italians try to imprison Amanda Knox.
