Yes, I'm not sure either except for obvious issues like pork, maybe certain seafood, and not mixing dairy and meat? Anyhow, back to the subject, the whole halal issue has nothing to do with jihad or sharia...that's just crazy. On the other hand, demanding halal in a food bank (IF THAT IS ACTUALLY OCCURING) is nuts as well.
The OP link is to a story that is high on the OMG-I'mScared factor. That story did have a link to a MSM story that was considerably calmer. Somali spokespersons raised it at a city council meeting as an issue with the city foodbank. After some discussion, it was decided to research the issue - how big a problem is it? can/should the city foodbank deal with it? - and it will be further discussed at the november meeting.

Oh, of course. That's why I mentioned a few posts up that my area, despite being very multi-cultural, doesn't seem to be having this issue. Also why my first comment on this thread was people are funny.
Now Muslims in America are demanding that food banks provide food that abide by Islamic sharia law, not just not including pork but being prayed over by an Islamic sheikh. There are also stories of Muslim business owners banning people with guide dogs because dogs are "unclean" in Islamic culture. There are also many Muslims who refuse to use alcohol based hand sanitizer and Muslims in Britain have demanded that KFC there stop providing alcohol based hand wipes because that insults Islam.
if they do not want free food from food shelves, then stop going to them. there is no law saying that muslims have to patronize food shelves.
One of our local foodbanks has a vegan shelf. The world has not ended, amazingly enough.
But do they have it voluntarily or do they have it because vegetarians demanded it? Do you see the difference between offering Sharia-compliant goods and services voluntarily and being required to do so?

There they go again... Trying to impose ancient laws of a land that never existed, guised as religion, on western society.
There are Kosher food banks in areas that have the Jewish population to support said banks. This really doesn't seem like news. if they have a population in need to support such a bank, it would make sense to observe?!
I mean God, this is NOTHING to the crazy orthodoxy the Religious Right seeks to impose on US citizens everyday.
