They absolutely do. Pro-gun people often don't see that gun control doesn't mean banning guns. I don't exactly know what nativeDallasite means in her own beliefs, but personally I favor stronger requirements to pass in order to get a gun (which I don't think anyone can argue with, unless they themselves cannot pass it ) but still want people who feel the need to carry a gun to have that option. Just when people like the Va Tech killer can get a gun despite documented mental problems, there's a huge problem, IMO.

I am socially liberal, support choice, gun control, anti-death penalty, I support health care reform, oppose school vouchers, totally oppose mixing religion with government...
Fiscally I am more conservative. Although I am all for helping the poor, there are many that are abusing the system and that should stop. I would cut certain tax write offs (too complicated to get into here), try to streamline government and cut spending.
As far as immigration, I think it should be easier for people to come here as documented guest workers, making them "legal", but also making them pay taxes. We need to stop forcing the illegals "underground", this only benefits employers that hire them in favor of legal workers to save themselves money.

The real issue is why people who want to commit suicide these days now feel the need to to take out as many with them in the process, and that's what needs to be addressed for a real solution to the problem.

And again, while you may support what you say,the organizations that you vote for to do that sneak and deceive above and beyond what they publically advertise they are doing. This is how "19 specific types of assault weapons" that were banned under Clinton turned out to be hundreds of types that were spinned to be included in that ban.....and the ban did little good anyway.

And,government does that with bills and laws being paased all the time, they only let the public know a certain amount of the language in these laws being passed, and that's why anything out of Congress should be looked at with sceptism.

I'm more conservative than anything. But since I'm not religious, these days I'm an outcast among the new religion-crazed Republicans. The Liberterians tend to be way too kooky on many issues for my taste. Are there any conservative democrats any more?

I chose socially liberal, fiscally conservative.

I am for the legalization of same-sex marriage (or, preferrably, removing marriage from government in the first place), equal employment discrimination protection, and drug legalization/decriminalization. I am pro-life and do not think Roe v. Wade is constitutional. I am anti-death penalty. I am against the current welfare system. I am for the deportation of illegal immigrants. I believe in limited government and that the feds should keep their noses out of our business. I'm still on the fence about universal health care but I'm inclined to reject it because our government can't seem to do anything right - why should we trust them with our health? I think Iraq is one of the biggest interventionist and financial mistakes this country has ever made.

I second this except I support the Fair tax.

Socially liberal. Live and let live, government out of bedrooms, same sex marriage = good for society, etc. However, I deplore racialism and the culture of victimization. It does no good.

Mostly fiscally liberal - kind of an economic populist, I suppose. I think universal health insurance would be GOOD for business. I think corporate welfare should be abandoned, and I think the government should invest in strategically important fields of research and industry more heavily - such as alternative energy. I think the rich can bear the burden of a couple more % of taxes to ensure that we don't revert to a neo-feudal economy, and I believe we should do more to level the economic playing field for kids vis-a-vis higher education so this truly IS a meritocracy, and not an aristocracy.

With that goes responsibility to our OWN people first, however. Illegal immigration is hitting the poor and lower middle classes hard on many levels, and needs to be curtailed through strict sanctions on employers and the non-accommodation of illegal aliens.

I'm all over the place, too. People frequently assume that I am very liberal (probably because I'm a product of the hippy generation). Because I am what I consider a middle-of-the-roader, I think it surprises people when they discover that I am not as liberal as they thought; and conversely, conservatives are surprised that I agree with some of their points of view, too.

Basically, I respect individual rights, although I can see where not all people are capable (or willing) to help themselves, thus, the need for some social programs (I'm not really in favor of welfare, though, except for short-term, special circumstances to help people get on their feet). I also oppose affirmative action programs.

I think universal health care would be good -- it is way too expensive in this country for many families to purchase health care on their own, and if your company doesn't provide it, or you can't get it as a small business owner (or are going broke trying to pay for your employees), I think that universal health care is fair. I know a number of people in other countries that are very, very happy with their health care (compared to ours).

I'm also pro-death penalty, which for some reason again surprises people about me. I'm pro-choice because I feel it is the woman's body and she has the right to choose what to do with it. If some guy ever changed bodies with a female and saw the difficulties women go through both physically and emotionally (especially avoiding pregnancy when many -- or most -- men do not take the responsibility), and the work involved in raising a child responsibly alone, I truly feel that their opinion would rapidly change. But since they will never have that experience, it won't happen.

I believe in fiscal responsibility. I felt so good when Bill Clinton balanced the books -- with a surplus (!) -- I thought that showed hard-core Republicans that Democrats DO have fiscal responsibility (and much better, I might add, than our current Republican president.....). I hope it redefined Democrats, at least a little. (Oh, yeah, and I'm against the war in Iraq -- great opposition to terrorism -- now we've got more terrorists who hate us!)

I do think that church and state should continue to be separate. One religion should not dominate a country or its policies -- otherwise, we'll end up like a middle-eastern country and a theocracy, only with a different religion -- not to my liking.

I believe in being hard-core on crime. I don't like money being spent on jails, on the other hand, I don't like someone getting a slap on the hand for something that they should pay the consequence for.

I wish there was a political party that encompassed so many various ideas. Probably, politicians of a particular party do share diverse views but feel politically bound to maintain a particular, but stringent and narrow appearance for their voter base. That's too bad to me because someone who is more in the middle would probably be better for all of us, since we're so divided in this nation. I'm definitely a swing voter.

Personally, just for fun and to mess with the Elections' officials, I often change my party affiliation. One time I'm a Republican, another a Democrat, another an Independent, another the Green Party, and around the circle I go. It's my way of making a statement that it is the issue that counts, not the party line.
