After reading and participating some of the debates on this forum, it would be useful to see the demographics of those who participate here. It will put perspective on just how this forum differs from other web forums.
I used to get involved in political forum debates, but most people, like Congress, only want to push their own opinion instead of reasoning together and finding middle ground. I haven't read too many of the posts on this forum yet.
Mid-40's; African American, born before Voting Rights Act; not affiliated with any of the major parties; political inclination is moderate independent.

Middle ground? I'm not sure it is always appropriate to find middle ground. Some issues, there is no middle ground.
I think it is more appropriate to make a sound argument. If you have data to support your argument, then all the better.
I'll be interested to see how this poll goes. We did one before and later I'll bring it back to life for comparison purposes. Since then, we've had many new members, and a change in Moderators.
In the past, I've voted mostly Republican, due to their reputation for fiscal responsibility. Since they've totally abandoned that stance, I'll most likely be voting Democratic or third party for the forseeable future.
I really don't like to label myself for political purposes. There are some issues that I side with liberals. There are some issues I side with conservatives. On some issues, I side with socialists. In the end, I don't like to make my judgement based off who I am going to please - but rather what I feel on the issue at hand.
I picked the second one; which I guess is the best fit.
I am a twenty-something Democrat. I was raised in PA by my "FDR-New Deal" Democrat Grandparents. I've also traveled a bit (to Canada, UK, Israel and Jamaica) as a "non-tourist" if you know what I mean...and I think it's safe to say that I'm a Democratic Socialist (which is not the same as Communist!).
But I'm more Libertarian when it comes to personal civil liberties...so I feel the government has no say in abortion or gay marriage and I'm for the decriminalization of drugs. However, I'm also religious and I'm against the federal funding of things like abortion clinics, etc. Private, non-profits should oversee that IMHO.
Basics like healthcare and education should be covered; especially here...in the richest country on the planet. I think that rich people have a heavier tax burden OR opt to provide money towards bona-fide charitable causes to recycle the money through the society. Sounds simple, but I often times don't find common ground with other people who a die-hard adherhents to a particular political philosophy.
I do like how the Republicans support Israel though.
