Yeah, they love their native son so much that he didn't even win his home state.
Brilliant.
Just like Mitt Romney would NEVER EVER win Massachusetts if he made it to the General. Heck, even the prominent Republicans in Mass are lining up behind other candidates! Even if Al Gore ran today, he probably wouldn't take his home state. Giuliani might lose NY. Clinton won't take Arkansas (though I don't know if that could be considered her "home state" or no ). You can't make a conservative state blue just because a native son runs. Doesn't work that way.
Lets see. The Tennessean is a middle Tennessee newspaper that doesn't get heavy distribution in the east and west parts of the state. I can only find it about 1/4 of the places that I buy the local paper. The Tennessean has a very liberal editorial group, who also voted on the award. True they post a lot of conservative articles as well, but if you read the editorials, they are almost exclusively liberal. People buy papers for both the associated content and the editorials. Just a hunch, but I would suspect people who read regularly are liberals who like Al Gore. It would be kind of like the NRA having a vote for the person of the year, but probably a little less biased than that vote would be.
The Tennessean is also a sensationalistic paper, so global warming is a great story producer for them. Why not honor a person who has helped stir the hype that has created tons of stories for them?
Most people I know detest Al Gore and wish he would move to Europe. Which is why he couldn't even pull the vote in his home state when he ran for president.
This award by no means represents a majority of Tennesseans. It represents a primarily liberal sample of the middle Tennessee population. Al Gore winning is no surprise.
Well, I can assure you it wasn't by popular majority!
Evidenced by failing to win his own state in the election.
And as far as someone more deserving, there's always Dolly Parton!
LOL, that made me laugh out loud! I was thinking the same thing. The man couldn't even carry his own state. *smacks forehead* Sheesh!
