[quote=anifani821;2385245]I just finished reading this whole thread. And I just gotta say - the only thing Americans have possibly been delusional about is that when we come to the defense of other nations - that they will appreciate our efforts.

the american govt. only helps when there is something in it for them. alot of people on this thread refer to ww2 and how you saved every ones butts, why then did hitler rage around europe for 4 years before the almighty u.s. swooped in to save the day?. when hitler tried to export the jews first ( killing them was the FINAL SOLUTION hence the name) your doors were closed . that doesnt sound very saviour like to me.

And how about our Statue of Liberty? We would not even be able to properly welcome the poor and tired and huddled masses to our shores were it not for the French.

If you are speaking about the collapse of the soviet union, that was 20 years ago due to outspending on armaments and more importantly, a subversive infiltration of our culture into the homes of many soviets. (Movies, art, literature.)

None of what you said has any bearing on whether certain ways of doing things are right or not since most large scale actions (collapse or reign of governments) are a result of multitude of things. That doesn't mean that everything is right within that multitude.

Actually, it was about 2 years that Hitler raged around Europe before the U.S. swooped in. Germany invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939 and the U.S. entered WWII on Dec. 8, 1941.

And if the U.S. only "helps" when there is something to gain, why did the U.S. bother with the Korean War? Or Vietnam? Or the first Gulf War? Or the current war with Iraq (and don't you dare say "for the oil").

Why, didn't you know? Vietnam was all about the oil, too....

Every modern war has involved access to resources. This is news?

Also, the U.S. helped rebuild Japan and Germany (among other countries) after WWII. Why do that since those countries didn't have any large reserves of oil?

We both know why, of course. Because the U.S. is generous to a fault.

And also just a bit do to with keeping Communism at bay and opening up new markets for America, but otherwise you are right on target.
