You are seeing what you want to see in the president's words, which is not necessarily how others interpret them. I read it as saying that the choices that parents--women, most of the time--are forced to make because they have no other options can and most likely will impact their earning capability for the rest of their lives, and that's not the only choice we want to leave women/parents with.

Interesting interpretation but how many parents stay home because they can't afford daycare? Even at lower income levels someone working full time would make more then the cost of daycare so based on your interpretation his premise is false. The vast majority of parents who choose to stay home do so because they can afford to make that choice. His comment makes zero sense in that context.
Me neither, I'm taking his comment at face value. He has a team of advisors and speech writes so when he gives a speech, the words that are used convey the precise message that is wished to be conveyed. The message here is that the government does not want parents to make the choice to stay home with their children. They want them in the work force. They want the kids in day care. While it would be nice for people not to have to worry so much about day care costs. It's very concerning to think about shifting those costs to taxpayers.
Sometimes, someone, usually mom, leaves the workplace to stay home with the kids, which then leaves her earning a lower wage for the rest of her life as a result. That’s not a choice we want Americans to make.”
he choice obama doesn't want america to have is a parent having to leave the work force if they are in it, because child care is too expensive. childcare needs to be affordable.
I know a few personally who made the decision precisely for that reason.
They couldn't afford it or it wasn't worth it after all was said and done because they would be spending such a large chunk on daycare that it made more sense to just stay home? Those are two different things because in one scenario the parent still had someone at home who could support them thus they were still making a choice.
Read the rest of what I quoted. Not just the first few words.
