Hot Pockets sales are down due to food stamp cut backs. Walmart, which gets about 4 percent of its revenue from food stamps, also reports that SNAP reductions have hurt their business.
Walmart has a net reduction in sales due to SNAP cutbacks. Does this mean that needy people aren't eating as much since their food budget was cut?
This is a good thing.SNAP and similiar redistribution schemes need to be gone.
Walmart has a 25% market share in US grocery sales. If it was just redistribution then Walmart's non SNAP sales should go up as SNAP benefits decline - but Walmart reports a net loss in sales attributable to SNAP reductions.
I'm not sure what the point of this thread is. The reduction in SNAP benefits was due to a temporary increase that was allowed to expire at the end of 2013. It's not like evil politicians are wresting food away from small children.
And I'm one of those crazy people that think if you need money from the government to feed your kids, you should be spending it on real food, not overpriced convenience food.
I looked up the Hot Pockets nutrition facts for Ham 'N Cheese on Nutritiondata.self.com. One Hot Pocket was 340 calories, 45% carbs, 38% fat, 666mg of Sodium and 17% protein. Other than iron and calcium, there were no micro-nutrients listed as contained in this product. Is one Pocket a meal or do people eat several for one meal?
I've never seen a Hot Pocket, much less tasted one, but who eats this stuff? I wouldn't eat a Hot Pocket on a bet after reading the full ingredients list.

Walmart offers the lowest prices on products that are cheap but filling, and do not require cooking. When you go to one of the store that is filled with the typical "People of Walmart" you will notice two things. Huge displays of high calorie salty junk food items on sale, and people filling their carts with them.
SNAP and other such programs should be limited to fresh or frozen meat/fish/chicken and produce, not prepared foods , cookies, chips and candy.

Yes, that temporary increase in food stamps was part of the huge so-called "stimulus" package. I was once on food stamps and using a hot plate to prepare food. How much real food can you prepare on a hot plate?

Sic Michelle Obama on the SNAP program and let her rework it like she did with school lunches.
