ISIL stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant. Now, to us Westerners we don’t really make much of a distinction, do we? No, honestly from our perspective its all about the same. But how would a Muslim living in the Middle East view it? Just what is the Levant anyway? Let’s take a look.
The geographical term LEVANT refers to a multi-nation region in the Middle East. It’s a land bridge between Turkey to the north and Egypt to the south. If you look on a map, however, in the near exact middle of the nations that comprise the Levant, guess what you see? Come on, guess! It’s Israel.
When Barack Obama refers over and over to the Islamic State as ISIL, he is sending a message to Muslims all over the Middle East that he personally does not recognize Israel as a sovereign nation, but as territory belonging to the Islamic State.
BINGO!!
Now you know why Obama says that he has no plan, no goal, and no stated aim for dealing with ISIS. But he does have a plan, and it’s a really nasty, diabolical one. Obama’s plan is to drag his feet for as long as he can, doing only the bare minimum that Congress forces him to do. His “plan”to buy ISIS as much time as possible to make as many gains as they can. The Coded Message Obama Delivers When He Says ISIL Instead Of ISIS - Now The End Begins : Now The End Begins
"ISIL stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant."
And "ISIS stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria."
"Many politicians and media organizations that have chosen ISIL rather than ISIS have said they went with the former as a paean to grammar. When you translate the Arabic name for the group of insurgents (Al-Dawla Al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham) into English, many argue that using "the Levant" (a.k.a. ISIL) to describe the region is most accurate."
"Many women named Isis have been aggravated by the acronym favored by most people discussing the Islamic State."
"In the Capitol on Tuesday morning, House Democrats decided after a long debate that they too would call the extremist group ISIL -- partly because ISIS was a name that first belonged to a goddess, and then to thousands of women who took said goddess's name, before a terrorist group claimed it."
"The Obama administration has been clear that the Sunni insurgents represent a serious threat, and if the group sounds like nothing you've ever heard before, both in deed and name, it's probably easier to make that sink in."
"The Levant also denotes a far larger region than just Iraq and Syria. By calling the group ISIL instead of ISIS, it implies that the group is not only a serious threat, it is a large one too."
What I find interesting is that the Obama administration's attempt at renaming so many things keeps falling on deaf ears.
Other than people in the Obama administration, who else uses ISIL? There are still quite a few people not falling for "climate change" made because "global warming" wasn't successful at winning people over (or shedding the scandal). Better to use a squishy term that covers just about everything. Remember the first attempt with "Overseas Contingency Operation" that didn't stick except with government agencies told to use it instead of "war on terror." Then there was "man-caused disasters" instead of "terrorism." Seriously, even the President let that one fall by the wayside when it didn't catch on. "Investment" instead of "government spending." "Revenue enhancement" instead of "tax increases." "Kinetic military action" instead of "war in Libya." "Outliers" instead of "rogue states."
A very entertaining thread. I thank all who contributed to it.
For myself, I preferred ISIL. When the news people began talking about the rise of ISIS I immediately thought of the Egyptian Goddess, who was apparently responsible for the flooding of the Nile every year, due to her crying about, well, I don't know, but she cried, every year.
