WASHINGTON — The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States.

"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,'' long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means said.

A delegation of Lakota leaders has delivered a message to the State Department, and said they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the U.S., some of them more than 150 years old.

There is a long history of treaties between various Indian tribes and the US being ignored. Usually the other side does the "ignoring", or re-writing, or denying. In this case, it's the Indians. Hardly a 'first',,,,,

Why is it so important to them to withdraw a 150 years old treaty?

It didn't work out too good last time they were free .

If it ain't one thing the slave owning, indian robbing , land stealing , illegal abusing white man isn't doing it's another ! Everywhere i turn he has done something else .

Now I can say this without any prejudice my best friend of 50 years is Cherokee . And I can also tell you some things about my own tribes of anglo-saxons who have bad history , but thats not what this thread is about .

Before we came to this continent, the indians were at war with each other, the spanish, the french and everybody else who walked across the land they didn't own . Why didn't they own land, because they didn't believe in owning land , it belonged to whichever spirit they believed in .

My question is how can somebody take something from you that doesn't belong to you to begin with ?

They guarded the land for this spirit that was never available to make a sale much less a treaty .

Lots of indians died from cold winters and some for something as simple as need of dental work . But most died from war with other indians or other tribes .

I agree we did some bad things to the indians, but they did some pretty bad things to us too .

They have had 150 years to take advantage of civilization ,but chose to stay on their reservations and eat un-healthy foods and live un-healthy lifestyles ,except the smart ones who opened casinos and got rich . The rest just did their raindances, talked to spirits or got drunk .

They will just have to get in line with all the rest of the minority victims we owe reparations to is all I can say .

No, most died from diseases that white Europeans brought over from the old country that they had no immunity to..... Now the P.C. bleeding hearts out there will try to play it off like the white man did it on purpose because of a few recorded instances of small pox blankets given as faux gifts and such, but the truth of the matter is that it was almost entirely an unintentional consequence of two separated societies being thrust together and certainly nothing I intend to feel guilty about...
