Well, it would create about 35 jobs ..... and, of course, a few billion for a small number of oil/refinery tycoons. Why wouldn't that pass the Senate? Being in the back pocket of industry tycoons is very bipartisan.
I've seen various numbers for the jobs created by it. 35 is too low. But the numbers thrown around by the people who want it built are just as insane the other way. Near as I can tell it won't create all the many long term jobs.
It will however allow a canadian company to exercise eminent domain on American citizens, and make a bunch of already rich folks even more wealthy, and benefit Canada far far more then America. While it will in fact increase Americans environmental risks.
Overall Its not the awesome thing most people present it as, but its not the horrific thing others present it as either. I'd say its not a good deal, and if Canada wants it they should make us a better offer.
The House easily passed a measure on Friday authorizing construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, sending it on to the U.S. Senate where the issue is expected to come up for a vote next Tuesday.
Lawmakers voted 252 to 161 to approve the project. Thirty-one Democrats, including a handful who lost reelection last week, joined with all but one Republicans who voted."
Results and bipartisanship. That's what everyone wanted, that's what they got.
Sickening, that for 6 years the jobs of Americans wasn't important enough to get the bill through, but when ONE seat is at risk, they rally round.
That's not bipartisanship - it's desperation. Laughingly, it won't work.
"Follow the money" is often seen throughout CD but the KXL gets a free pass.
Explain to me again how getting Canadian tar sand oil to Asia is good for the US.
Oh right - the Koch's stand to make $110 billion.
B... B....Bu... but.... temporary jobs! Energy independence! Low gas prices!
Sucker born every minute.
Pretty much, I say the only way this pipeline should be built is if there is a way for it to be a benefit for Americans who will be taking on all of the risk, that would mean all of the profits should go to Americans rather than a handful of billionaires that don't have to take on any of the risk.
"The proposed Project would generate approximately 50 jobs during operations."

This is what passes as intelligent legislation, with all the need for rebuilding infrastructure in our country our largest concern is a Canadian pipeline. This will transfer oil for refining in the US that will be sent to another country. Instead of creating a right of way for an oil pipeline we should be doing the same for rail to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
It will actually provide more jobs than most people realize when you consider the manpower required to clean up the spills. Even the small everyday spills that will be common on pipelines require attention. Then if you have a disaster like spill the manpower will be in the hundreds maybe thousands. The manpower and profit from the Gulf of Mexico spill was in the Billions. I don't see something quite that bad happening but it's possible. The oil company will be more responsible than this one. So the bright side is maybe more jobs than thought.
