I know some Democratic candidates like Al Gore in 2000 and John Edwards in 2008 want to guarantee every child a college education. I am not sure where the other candidates stand on the issue. Would this be a good idea or not? I am against it, and will explain why in another post.

First off, I don't know how they can do this. So I wouldn't waste my time discussing it, but feel free. They might want to, but they won't.

Every child's guaranteed a high school education... as necessary as college seems to be nowadays, I'm not sure why it's treated so differently.

If every child were college material, it would probably not be a bad idea. But the honest truth is that there's a significant proportion of the public who struggle mightily with school, even as early as 5th grade.

It would be great if everyone were born a gifted artist, athlete, and musician, too. That simply isn't the case, though. Any large population of people will comprise a broad spectrum of talents and abilities. We're not all at the top.

In principle it sounds good, but frankly I don't think everyone requires a college education. We've put too much stress on college degrees, and it isn't working to improve the work force, or people's lives.

If anything I would explore alternative educational systems, and educate folks in skill-based training and liberal arts programs.

Can you find many handicrafts anymore? How about learning metal work; glass inlays; fiber arts; etc. -- trades are nearly extinct.

There's a point of diminishing return. On a state level I would support providing funding for tuition and used books for 8 semesters to any student that maintains a 3.5 GPA in highschool, backed up by a high score on a standardized test (SAT, ACT, SAT II, etc) of their choice. Or handle it like many employers do... tuition reimbursment based upon grades... Get an A and you get 100% reimbursed, a B you get 90%, C you get 75%, D or F you get 0%.

But I would be opposed to a national program of any sort... it's simply not the jurisdiction of the federal government.

Yes providing they qualify to be up to the material. I also believe funding for education should start at age zero for all children who parents have to work.

Its the easiest way to steal money without being arrested... they could either do it themselves and be arrested or ask the government to do it and get away with it..
